'일제 만행 고발 만화전' 프랑스서 열려

장봉군•김용민•서민호•이희재 등 시사만화가를 포함해 만화가 33명이 일제강점기 일본의 만행을 고발하는 전시회를 프랑스에서 개최한다.

2일 민족문제연구소와 전국시사만화협회에 따르면 33명의 국내 만화작가들은 오는 9월 프랑스 쌩-쥐스트-르-마르텔에서 열리는 '세계시사만화축제'에서 독립 부스를 마련해 작품 50여점을 선보인다.

올해로 33회째인 세계시사만화축제는 매년 전 세계 800여명의 유명 작가들이 모 이는 세계 최대 만화제의 하나다.

최근 프랑스 앙굴렘 국제만화페스티벌에서 일본군 위안부 문제를 고발한 한국 기획전이 깊은 인상을 남긴 가운데 근현대사 전반을 주제로 한 또 다른 전시회가 열 릴 예정이어서 그 의미를 더하고 있다.

김용민 시사만화가의 작품으로 아베 신조 일본 총리의 역사 인식을 꼬집었다.

앙굴렘 국제만화페스티벌에 비해 시사•예술적 성격이 강한 세계시사만화축제의 작품은 더욱 풍자적이고 도발적이다.

김용민 작가는 1970년 서독 총리 빌리 브란트가 폴란드 유대인 희생자들 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 사죄하는 사진과 아베 신조 일본 총리가 야스쿠니 신사를 참배하는 모습을 나란히 배치해 일본의 역사 인식을 꼬집는다.

이희재 작가는 '난중일기-독도'라는 작품에서 일본의 영토 야욕을 신랄하게 비판할 예정이다.

행사장인 쌩-쥐스트-르-마르텔은 1944년 나치 독일이 수백 명의 민간인을 교회에 몰아넣고 학살한 오라두-쉬르-글랑 마을과 가깝다. 1919년 일제가 3•1 운동에 대한 보복으로 벌인 제암리 교회 학살을 연상시킨다는 게 이들의 설명이다.

이희재 작가는 "일본 군국주의의 부활을 저지하려는 만화가들의 작은 외침이 울림이 되어 일제의 만행이 더는 되풀이되지 않았으면 한다"고 말했다.

아울러 전시 기간에 오라두-쉬르-글랑 마을에서 나치 피해자와 일본군 위안부 피해자 등이 참여하는 포럼도 추진된다.

민족문제연구소와 전국시사만화협회는 세계시사만화축제에 앞서 올 상반기 경기 화성시의 후원을 받아 국회와 화성시청 등지에서 국내 전시도 연다. 올 3•1절에도 화성시 제암리에서도 행사를 계획했지만 조류인플루엔자(AI) 우려로 연기했다.

최민 전국시사만화협회 운영위원은 "사실에 기반을 둔 역사를 우리나라 청소년뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 알리겠다"며 "프랑스 전시회 예산 지원이 필요하다"고 말했다. (연합)

S. Korean cartoons on Japan's wartime atrocities to be exhibited in France in September

A group of South Korean cartoonists will exhibit their works depicting Japan's past wartime atrocities at a French cartoon festival later this year, local groups said on Sunday.

A total of 33 South Korean cartoonists are planning to exhibit about 50 comic strips at the international comics festival to be held at St. Just-le-Martel in September, according to the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities and the Association of Korea Editorial Cartoon.

The annual festival marks its 33rd year this year and draws more than 800 cartoonists from around the world.

The South Koreans' works will focus on Japan's wartime crimes during its early 20th-century imperialism and 46 years of colonial rule over Korea that started in 1910.

Japan's renewed nationalist behaviors in recent years will also be featured in the cartoons, including its recurring territorial claims to Dokdo, South Korea's easternmost islets.

One of the works to be displayed will depict Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent visit to the controversial Yasukuni war shrine, highlighting the country's unrepentant attitude toward its past wrongdoing compared with Germany's repeated apologies given to victims of Nazi Germany, the groups said.

The Japanese shrine honors its war dead, including 14 Class-A war criminals from World War II.

"I hope these small actions by the cartoonists will stop Japan from repeating imperialist atrocities," Lee Hee-jae, one of the participating cartoonists, said.

During the 10-day cartoon festival, a forum will be held at a nearby village with victims of Nazi Germany and Japan's wartime sexual enslavement, according to the South Korean groups.

Similar South Korean cartoons on Japanese sexual enslavement drew some 17,000 visitors during the 2014 Angouleme International Comics Festival held from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 in the namesake French city.

Historians say up to 200,000 women, many of them Korean, were coerced into sexual servitude by the Japanese army at front-line brothels during WWII when the Korean Peninsula was a Japanese colony.

Japan, under the nationalist Abe administration, is attempting to whitewash its history of wartime aggression and restrengthen its military capacities.
