A South Korean trade agency employee in his late 30s was kidnapped in Libya, but the identities of his kidnappers are not known, the Foreign Ministry here said Monday.

"The kidnapping took place early Monday morning Korean time," the ministry official said.

The kidnapped person is known to be Han Seok-woo, the head of the Libya unit of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), according to the ministry and KOTRA.

He was returning home after his work at the trade office in Tripoli, the capital city, when about four unidentified men took him, according to them.

The purpose of the kidnapping is also not known, the ministry said.

The South Korean government and KOTRA are trying to find details of the kidnapping and identify the kidnappers.

Han has been stationed in the Tripoli office since July 2012. (Yonhap News)
