South Korea’s No. 1 mobile carrier SK Telecom said Wednesday it has agreed with a Chinese counterpart to share its know-how on the Long Term Evolution network.

SK Telecom said it will support China Telecom Corp. in establishing the network in areas covering Shanghai by sharing its technologies and experiences related to the LTE service.

The company will also send its telecommunications experts to China under the deal.

China approved the adaptation of the LTE network into the country in December, with mobile carriers there planning to invest some 160 billion yuan ($26.3 billion) for the network.

The LTE service enables smartphone users to access and stream data faster than the existing 3G network.

The Korean mobile carrier added it also plans to expand the LTE consulting service to other cities in the world’s No. 2 economy down the road.

SK Telecom said it has clinched similar deals with an Indonesian counterpart earlier this month and will also forge ties with Taiwanese and Mongolian mobile carriers during the first half of the year. (Yonhap News)
