LONDON (AP) ― The most unpredictable Premier League season in years provided more surprises Saturday when Chelsea gave up a 90th-minute winner at Stoke and beleaguered defending champion Manchester United lost to Newcastle for its second home defeat in four days.
With Manchester City held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton, Liverpool was able to capitalize. It routed West Ham 4-1 to go to second place, with Luis Suarez following his spectacular four-goal game by scoring again at Anfield.
Arsenal kept its four-point lead going into Sunday’s game against Everton. Chelsea’s 3-2 loss at Stoke, sealed by Oussama Assaidi’s late strike, saw Jose Mourinho’s club drop to third place on goal difference behind Liverpool.Spain
Midfielder Arda Turan scored twice to help Atletico Madrid start its defense of the Copa del Rey title by easing to a 4-0 win at third-division Sant Andreu on Saturday.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone left strike duo Diego Costa and David Villa on the bench for the first hour of the match, opting for a starting 11 with just four regular starters and featuring youngsters Oliver Torres and Javier Manquillo. It was still more than enough to overpower Sant Andreu.Italy
Mario Balotelli scored twice and also hit the crossbar but AC Milan still had to scramble for a 2-2 draw at promoted Livorno in the Serie A on Saturday.
