[영상] 침몰한 배에서 3일간 생존한 남자

침몰한 배에서 시신들을 수습하기 위해 바다에 들어간 잠수부가 한 남자의 싸늘한 손을 잡는다. 그러나 시신인 줄 알았던 남자의 손은 잠수부의 손을 마주잡는다. 생각치도 못한 생존자가 발견된 것이다.

AP통신이 3일 (현지시간) 유튜브를 통해 공개한 영상의 일부이다. 이 영상은 지난 5월, 대서양에서 침몰한 한 배에서 기적적으로 구출된 나이지리아인 해리슨 오제그바 오케네 씨의 구출장면을 담고 있다.

오케네 씨는 배가 30미터 해저로 가라앉고 72시간 동안 배안에 있던 에어포켓 속에서 콜라 한병만으로 굶주림을 달래며 버티다가 극적으로 구조되었다. 당시 그를 구출한 잠수부가 소속된 네덜란드 회사 DCN 다이빙 측에 따르면, 이들은 승무원들이 모두 사망했을 것이라고 보고 시신을 수습하기 위해 선내로 진입했다고 한다.

“모든 사람에게 있어서 두려운 순간이었습니다”라고 DCN 다이빙의 프로젝트 매니저 토니 워커씨가 말했다. “갇혀 있던 분은 무슨일인지 모르니 두려웠을 것이고, 잠수부는 시신을 찾고 있었으니 두려웠고, 통제실에 있던 우리는 (비디오 화면에 나타난) 손이 갑자기 잠수부를 잡으니 무서웠죠”라고 워커 씨는 말했다.

영상에 나온 잠수부는 오케네 씨가 손을 잡자 기쁜 목소리로 “생존자가 있습니다! 살아있어요”라고 말했다고 한다.

워커 씨에 따르면 오케네 씨가 “믿을수 없을만큼 행운아”라면서 조금만 시간이 더 지났어도 호흡이 불가능했을 것이라고 전했다.

배의 요리사였던 오케네 씨는 침몰 당시 화장실에 있었는데, 큰 충격을 받고 화장실 여기저기로 튕겨졌다고 회고했다. 이후 그는 구명조끼와 손전등, 다른 도구를 찾고 “안전하게 느껴지는” 선실을 찾아 그곳에서 기다리기 시작했다.

그는 기다리는 동안 그의 아내가 보내준 성경구절을 외우며 두려움을 달랬다.

오케네 씨는 지금까지도 자신이 구조된 것이 “하느님의 덕분”이라고 믿고 있다고 한다.

Footage emerges of man rescued after 3 days on ocean floor

A video of a Nigerian man being rescued after spending three days submerged at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean emerged Tuesday via U.S. media.

The video, uploaded on YouTube by the Associated Press, shows the improbable salvation of a man named Harrison Odjegba Okene, who was a cook of an ill-fated ship that sank on May 26. His rescue was even unexpected by his saviors: the Dutch Company DCN Diving said that its divers were sent to the scene to look for bodies.

The miraculous survivor had been in the toilet when the sinking occurred. Okene said that after the vessel plunged, he found his way out of the toilet and into a cabin which “felt safe,” having secured some tools and a life vest.

After that, all he could do was wait.

“I started calling on the name of God. ... I started reminiscing on the verses I read before I slept,” he said in an interview with a Nigerian newspaper. Okene just had a single bottle of Coke to distract him from hunger, cold and the fear of impending death at a depth of 30 meters.

Some 72 hours after his entombment, help came at last. And just in time, too.

“He was incredibly lucky he was in an air pocket but he would have had a limited time ... (until) he wouldn’t be able to breathe anymore,” DCN Diving’s project manager Tony Walker told the Associated Press.

Months after his rescue, Okene said that he still believes it was divine intervention that saved him from the brink of death. The 11 other sailors aboard the ship died, and his relatives were told that he had died, too.
