Researchers in Britain and Australia have claimed that Antarctic summer ice melting is occurring 10 times faster than it did 600 years ago.

In 2008, Britain-French scientists examined a 362-meter long ice core from James Ross Island in Antarctica to figure out the past 1,000 years of temperature changes in the region.

By reexamining the 2008 study, researchers at Australian National University and the British Antarctic Survey discovered that the temperature of the ice core was 1.6 degrees Celsius lower 600 years ago.

The lead author, Nerilie Abram of ANU, said the melt has intensified since the mid-20th century and human-induced climate change played a huge role in the acceleration.

“The Antarctic peninsula has warmed to a level where even small increases in temperature can now lead to a big increase in summer melt,“ Abram said.

The finding was published in the journal Nature Geoscience on Sunday.

“남극 얼음 600년 전보다 10배 빨리 녹아”

여름철 남극 대륙의 얼음이 600년 전과 비교할 때 10배나 빨리 녹고 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.

16일(현지시간) 호주 국영 ABC 방송은 영국 남극 탐사단(BAS)과 공동 연구를 벌여온 호주 국립대학(ANU) 과학자들이 최근 남극대륙 360m 깊이의 얼음 핵 내부를 탐사한 결과, 600년 전에는 지금보다 온도가 1.6도가 낮았다는 사실을 밝혀냈다고 보도했다.

이번 연구는 지난 1000년간의 남극 얼음 핵의 온도 변화를 연구한 2008년의 자료를 토대로 이루어졌다.

연구 책임자인 호주 국립 대학의 네릴리 아브람 박사는 "특히 최근 50년간 녹는 속도가 급속히 빨라 졌다"며 "지구 온난화에 따른 여름철 남극대륙 기온 상승이 이 같은 변화를 가져왔다"고 말했다.

그는 현재 남극은 아주 작은 폭의 온도 상승으로도 대규모 얼음 용해가 일어날 수 있는 상태라고 경고했다.
