Controversial remarks by an editor from men’s Esquire magazine drew furious responses from women around the world.

Alex Bilmes, the editor for the magazine’s British edition, expressed his opinion on how Esquire produces content featuring women.

“The women we feature in the magazine are ornamental, that is how we see them,” he said at the Advertising Week Europe conference. “I could lie and say we are interested in their brains as well but on the whole we‘re not, they are there to be a beautiful object.”

Bilmes went on to say that men sometimes look at women “because they’re sexy,” and his magazine provides pictures of beautiful women to meet their needs.

His comments were bashed by Internet users and journalists.

A female writer from the Guardian criticized Bilmes and pointed out the resurgence of “sexist lad culture.”

“I can’t help wondering whether or not he may also be in possession of a time-traveling automobile, as he is clearly stumbling around the wrong century,” she wrote. “I imagine some admire Bilmes’ no-bullxxxx stance. Perhaps I would, too, were it not so pathetically retro.”

A number of Twitter users, mostly women, expressed their discontent at Bilmes’ words.

“Sexist Esquire editor Alex Bilmes says they ’treat women like cars.’ And I dreamed of working here. Pff,” wrote a female Twitter. Another woman chimed in, saying that she “just vomited in my own mouth.”

패션 잡지 에스콰이어의 영국 지부 편집장이 성차별적인 발언을 해 논란이 일고 있다.

빔즈 편집장의 발언들은 여성 네티즌과 저널리스트들 사이에서 거센 반발을 유발했다.

가디언의 한 여성 기자는 빔즈를 비난하며 “성차별적인 사나이 문화”가 다시 생겨나고 있다고 말했다.

“나는 그가 타임머신이 있는 것이 아닌지 의문을 가질 수 밖에 없는데, 그가 엉뚱한 세기(century)에서 헤매고 있는 게 때문이다”라고 그녀는 적었다. “어떤 사람들은 빔즈의 ‘입에 발린 말은 안한다(no bullxxxx)’는 태도에 감탄할 것이다. 만약 (빔즈의 발언이) 한심할 정도로 구식이 아니었다면 나도 감탄할 지도 모른다”라고 그녀는 덧붙였다.

트위터에서도 여성들의 반발은 거셌는데 한 트위터 유저는 “성차별적인 편집장 알렉스 빔즈가 그들이 ‘여성을 자동차처럼 대한다’라고 말했답니다. 이런 회사에서 일하는걸 꿈꿨다니. 칫”이라고 적었다. 다른 여성 유저 역시 이에 동의하면서 “방금 입안에 토했어요!”라고 적었다.
