북미 최대 음악 마켓 ‘사우스 바이 사우스웨스트’ 전년대비 3배 많아진 한국 가수들을 초청 K팝 쇼케이스를 연다.

올해 SXSW 행사는는 3월 8일부터 17일까지 축제가 이어진다. SXSW 행사 중 하나로 열리는 ‘케이팝 나이트 아웃 인 SXSW (K-Pop Night out in SXSW)’는 오는 12일 오후 7시 30분부터 다음날 오전 2시까지 미국 텍사스 오스틴에 위치한 공연장 ‘일리시움’에서 한국 뮤지션들의 릴레이 공연으로 진행된다. 이날 공연에는‘갤럭시 익스프레스,’‘에프엑스,’‘국카스텐,’ 정차식, ‘노브레인,’ ‘더 긱스,’ 이승열 등 한국 대표급 아이돌 스타와 록 밴드가 SXSW로부터 공식 초청을 받아 참가한다.

올해 SXSW에 참석하는 한국 록밴드는 역사 최대규모의 진출로, 총 11개 팀이 참가한다. 이는 지난해 11월 서울 국제 뮤직 마켓 (MU:CON 2012)와 지난 1월 프랑스 칸느 미뎀 (MIDEM)에서 열린 K-POP 쇼케이스의 성공 덕분에 대거 초청받게 됐다. 이 중 9팀이 한국콘텐츠진흥원의 지원을 받는다.

모든 쇼케이스는 문화체육관광부와 한국콘텐츠진흥원이 K팝 해외 진출 지역 활대와 장르 다양화를 위해 이루어졌다.

3월 4일 한국콘텐츠진흥원 홍상표 원장은 “한국의 아이콘으로 자리 잡은 K-POP 아이돌 스타와 함께 우리 대표 록 밴드의 라이브 공연을 선보여 한국음악의 다양성을 팝의 본고장인 미국에 본격적으로 알리는 계기가 될 것”이라고 전했다.

SXSW는 1987년 미국 텍사스 주 오스틴시에 시작된 오랜 역사의 음악 페스티벌로, 현재 음악, 영화 기술 분야까지 아우르는 미디어 축제로 열리고 있다.

작년 이 행사에는 뮤지션 2,300여 팀이 참여 해 100 개의 공연장에서 15만명의 군중을 모은 바 있다. 특히 올해를 포함해 3번째로 SXSW에서 공연을 선보이는 갤럭시 익스프레스는 지난해 뉴욕타임즈의 SXSW 결산 기사에 전 세계 2,000여 개 팀 중 하이라이트 10선에 선정되기도 했다.

이에 대해 갤럭시 익스프레스에서 베이스와 보컬을 맡고 있는 이주현은 3월 4일 이루어진 전화인터뷰에서“예상하지 못했던 결과다, 그냥 매번 하던 대로 열심히 했는데 좋은 성과를 낼 수 있었다”고 전했다.

갤럭시 익스프레스는 오는 5일부터 다음달 11일 까지 총 4주 간 샌프란시스코, 텍사스, 시카고, 덴버, 아칸소 등을 순회하며 공연을 펼칠 예정이다. 국내 밴드가 미국 14개 주 25개 도시를 투어 하는 대장정에 나선 것은 대중음악계 최초다.

그는 작년 콘서트에 대해 “나이를 불문하고 여러 사람들이 운집되어 있었다, 굉장히 자연스러운 분위기에서 모든 연령대가 우리 음악에 자연스럽게 녹아 드는 느낌이 들었다, 굉장히 놀라웠다”고 회상했다.

이어 그는 “가사가 아무리 다른 나라 말이라고 해도 멜로디에 따라 분위기를 전환할 수 있고 소통할 수 있다. 음악에는 한계가 없다”고 말했다.

이번 SXSW에는 캐나다 출신 일렉트로닉 하우스 DJ 데드마우스(deadmau5), DJ 리치 호틴 (Richie Hawtin)을 포함하여 미국의 전설적 록 밴드 너바나의 드러머 데이비드 그롤(Dave Grohl)이 작년 브루스 스프링스틴(Bruce Springsteen)에 이어 기조연설자로 나선다. 올해는 힙합 듀오 맥클모어 앤 라이언 루이스(MackleMore & Ryan Lewis), 미국 록 밴드 플레이밍 립스(Flaming Lips), 그린데이 (Green Day) 등 유명 가수들도 대거 참여할 예정이다. America’s largest music industry event, South by Southwest triples the number of Korean artists in 2013

This year will mark Korea’s largest presence yet at SXSW, America’s largest music industry festival, which will be held from March 8-17 in Austin, Texas.

“K-Pop Night Out at 2013 SXSW,” featuring 11 Korean groups, three times more than last year, will take place at the legendary Elysium live club from March 12-13. On Feb. 12 the SXSW’s official page added f(x) to the line-up, along with other artists including Galaxy Express, Guckkasten, Jeong Cha-sik, No Brain, The Geeks and Yi Sung-yol.

The spot light on K-pop has largely to do with the success of two previous festivals MU:CON Seoul 2012, the first international music conference which was inaugurated last November in Seoul, and “K-pop Night Out” at MIDEM, March International du Disque et de I’Edition Musicale, held in January in Cannes, France.

All events were held with the support from the Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and KOCCA, Korea Creative Content Agency, which started the mission to encourage exports of Korean music and K-pop in particular. Nine groups at SXSW will be sponsored by KOCCA this year.

“I believe this is a great opportunity to show the diversity of Korean music which includes not only K-pop leading the Korean Wave, but also a range of indie, alternative, and punk rock bands” said Hong Sang-pyo, president of KOCCA, in a press release.

SXSW is one of the biggest annual music conference and festival events held annually. First held in 1987, the event has now grown into one of the most important and influential music/film festivals in the world.

Last year, 2,300 music acts performed at 100 different venues and were seen by over 150,000 attendees. Galaxy Express was selected as one of the top live shows at SXSW from the likes of The New York Times.

“It was unexpected, we tried to do our best on stage and it paid off,” said bass guitarist and vocalist Lee Joo-hyun in a phone interview.

Invited to the SXSW three consecutive years, the rock band will be staging tours in North America after the festival period. The trio will play 28 concerts in 14 states from March 7 to April 11, making pit stops in San Francisco, Texas, Chicago, Denver, Arkansas and more.

“Last year when we held the concert we had an audience comprised of a wide range of ages. Regardless of age, everyone enjoyed a good show, it was a phenomenal experience,” said Lee.

“I was fascinated that we could connect with the American audience with barely any English lyrics. Music has more power than words, rhythm and melody makes magic.”

Meanwhile, SXSW has invited Canada’s most influential artists in electronic music. On March 12 the festival will feature world-leading DJ Richie Hawtin and globally-renowned electronic artist Deadmau5. The festival will also showcase big shots including U.S rock icons Green Day, hip-hop maestros RZA, Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang Clan, and Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl.
