A British man who bought a pair of fresh oysters to treat his hangover said he discovered a pearl inside one of the mollusks.

James Humphries, 34, of Newquay, England, said he bought the oysters -- which he described as "the perfect hangover cure" -- from E Rawle & Co. fishmongers Saturday morning after a night of drinking, and discovered a pearl while eating his breakfast, The Mirror reported Tuesday.

“It was only when I spat it out that I discovered it was a pearl," he said. "It's small, but I absolutely love it."

Paul Cox of the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth said Humphries' discovery was a rare find.

"It's extremely rare for pearls to occur naturally in the wild," he said. "Most of the pearls you see are cultivated or come from pearl oysters. I've never come across anyone who has found a wild pearl before. It's extremely unusual and he's a very lucky man."

Heather Bell of Little Gem jewelers in Newquay said it is difficult to put a price on the pearl.

"It's difficult to put an exact price on this, but given the rarity, it's a priceless find for James," she said.

Humphries said he plans to keep the pearl.

"I'm thinking of getting the pearl made into a piece of jewelry -- possibly a little silver fish with the pearl for its eye," he said. (UPI)

한 영국인 남성이 숙취해소를 위해 구매한 굴에서 진주를 발견했다.

제임스 험프리 (34)는 토요일 아침 전날 마신 술로 아픈 속을 달래려 해산물 가게에서 들러 굴을 샀다.

영국의 일간지 더 미러 (The Mirror)는 화요일 험프리가 집에 돌아와 굴을 먹다가 진주를 발견했다고 보도했다.

험프리는 “굴을 먹다가 뭔가 목에 걸려서 뱉었더니 진주가 나왔다”며 “(진주가) 작긴 하지만 정말 맘에 든다”고 말했다. 

플리머스에 위치한 국립 해양 아쿠아리움의 폴 콕스는 시중에 판매되는 굴에서 진주를 발견하는 건 흔치 않은 일이라고 말했다.

“진주가 자연적으로 생성되는 일은 극히 드물다. 우리가 흔히 보는 진주는 진주조개에서 만들어지거나 양식된 것들이다. 난 한번도 천연 진주를 발견한 사람을 본적이 없는데 매우 운이 좋은 사람인 것 같다”고 말했다.

리틀 잼 보석상의 헤더 벨은 발견된 진주의 가격을 책정하기는 어렵다고 말했다.

그녀는 “정확한 값을 매기는 건 참 어렵지만 희귀성을 고려했을 때 제임스에겐 가격을 넘어 귀중한 발견이리라 생각된다”고 말했다.

한편, 험프리는 “은으로 물고기 모양을 만들어서 이 진주를 눈으로 넣어 액세서리를 만들까 생각 중이다”라며 진주를 팔지 않고 간직할 계획이라고 말했다.
