정신 없는 클럽의 비트와 귀엽고 섹시한 의상, 의미 없는 가사들로 가득 찬 오늘날의 가요계에서 진정한 뮤지션을 찾기란 쉽지 않다.

실제로 TV에 얼굴을 자주 비추는 가수들 중 자신의 이야기를 가사에 담아내는 이들을 드물다.

그 와중에 가수 이외에도 작곡가, 음악가, 일러스트레이터라는 타이틀과 재능을 갖춘 로지피피 (본명 류성희)는 단연 돋보인다.

로지피피는 작곡과 기타연주는 물론이고 지난 4개의 앨범 커버 모두 자신이 디자인했다.

로지피피는 코리아헤럴드와의 인터뷰에서 “나는 다재다능한 아티스트가 되기 위해 노력한다. 내가 만든 음악은 실제 내 생활과 상상력을 반영한 솔직한 노래다”라고 말했다.

로지피피는 로지 펑키 퍼퓸 (Rossy Punky Perfume)의 약자로 자유와 불순응을 상징하는 ‘펑키’와 사람들이 향을 맡을 수 있는 음악을 만들고 싶다는 의미의 ‘향수’의 합성어다.

로지피피의 부드럽고 편안한 보컬이 자작곡의 가사와 맞물린 보사노바 풍의 음악은 그녀의 특유의 진실함과 성숙한 분위기를 풍긴다.

그녀는 “많은 면에서 나는 내성적이다. 혼자 집에서 생각을 하다가 영감을 받아 곡을 만드는 때가 많다”며 이러한 자신의 성격이 묻어난 곡들이 많다고 말했다.

로지피피는 항상 미술과 일러스트레이션에 대한 열정이 있었지만 고등학교를 졸업할 때 즈음 음악에 빠져 밴드 생활을 하기로 결심했다며 “음악에 대한 생각을 멈출 수 가 없었다. 그 때 이것이 내가 꼭 해야 하는 일이라는 것을 깨달았다”고 말했다.

로지피피는 또 비트에만 신경을 쓴 음악과의 차별성을 강조하며 “곡을 쓸 때 가사와 멜로디에 집중한다. 요즘 유행에 맞춘 곡들과는 다르게 앞으로 10년 또 20년간 들으며 즐길 수 있는 음악을 만들려고 한다”고 말했다.

2006년 첫 앨범 “더 데모”로 가요계에 데뷔한 이래 최근 발표한 미니앨범 “로맨티카”를 포함한 5장의 앨범을 더 발매했다.

미니앨범의 타이틀곡 “늦지않았길”은 더 늦기 전에 사랑의 감정을 전하고 픈 마음을 담은 미드템포의 팝발라드다.

로지피피는 “사람들을 생각하게 만드는 음악을 하고 싶다. 깊이가 있으면서도 솔직하고 많은 생각을 자신의 음악에 녹여내는 사람이 되고 싶다”고 말했다.

Artistic virtuoso RossyPP is a breath of fresh air

With today’s music scene flooded with discombobulating club beats, gaudy costumes and cutesy, throwaway lyrics, true musicianship is becoming increasingly hard to find.

The singers on TV are not the people that are behind the lyrics or the composition of the songs.

Singer, songwriter, musician and illustrator Ryu Sung-hee, who goes by the stage name RossyPP, is one of those rare talents who is truly deserving of the title “artist.” Not only does she sing, compose her own music and play guitar, but the all-around musician has even created the arrangements to all the music in her past albums.

And as if it were necessary to tack on any more notches onto her creativity belt, RossyPP is also a budding illustrator who has designed the cover art on the jackets of her last four albums.

“I strive to be a well-rounded artist,” she said. “The music I create is honest. All my songs are a reflection of me, both my real life experiences and my imagination.”

The stage name RossyPP is short for Rossy Punky Perfume; “Punky” to represent the image of freedom and nonconformity and “Perfume,” with the meaning of creating music that people could breathe in like a scent. Her music has a pop-inspired, bossa nova-like sound and paired with her soft, soothing vocals and her self-composed lyrics, RossyPP’s songs have an air of maturity and authenticity to them that reflect greatly on her personality.

“I am actually a very nerdy person,” she said laughing. “Although I am introverted in many ways, most of the inspiration for my music stems from when I am at home just and being alone with my thoughts.”

Although RossyPP has always had a passion for art and illustrations, it wasn’t until after she graduated high school that she found her passion for music and decided to join a band. It was then that she realized she wanted to live a life of music.

“I just couldn’t stop thinking about music,” she said. “I knew that this was something that I had to do.”

The artist made her professional music debut in 2006 with her first album “The Demo” and has since released five other alums including her latest mini-album titled “Romantica,” which was released earlier this month.

“When I write my music, I concentrate a great deal on both the lyrics and the melody,” she said. “Unlike songs that just go with the flow of the current trends, I think of my songs as music that you could listen to and enjoy 10 or 20 years down the line.”

“Godspeed,” the title track of RossyPP’s latest album, is a mid-tempo pop ballad piece about realizing one’s feelings about a belated love, before it’s too late. Unlike in her previous albums, “Romantica” features her playing along with a band, giving her songs a fuller sound this time around.

“I really wish to contribute songs that make people think,” she said. “The image that I want to project is that of someone who is honest, who has depth and puts a lot of thought into their music.”
