The Ministry of National Defense has set a new guideline for “entertainment soldiers” to regulate off-duty leave and leaving base on official duty.

Celebrities serving as entertainment soldiers will receive the same amount of vacation as regular soldiers, according to the guidelines set by the Defense Ministry. In addition, entertainment soldiers will have to return to base by 10 p.m. should they leave for a performance.

“An entertainment solider leaving base alone is strictly prohibited and he will have to return that day if going to Seoul,” said an official from the Defense Ministry.

Recently the Defense Ministry faced criticism over the special treatment Corporal Jung Ji-hoon, better known as singer Rain, received while fulfilling his mandatory military service.

According to government data, 32 stars-turned-soldiers who served between November 2009 and September 2011 received 75 days of vacation on average, compared to 43 days for regular soldiers.

국방부 관계자는 24일 특별관리지침와 관련, “홍보지원병(연예병사)에게 특혜를 제공한다는 오해를 제거하기 위해 일반병사와 동일한 휴가 기준을 적용키로 했다”며 “대외행사 후 포상조치 등 별도 혜택도 차단하도록 조치했다”고 밝혔다. 특별관리지침에 따르면 연예병사가 공무외출을 나갈 때는 간부가 동행해야 하며 외출 당일 저녁 10시 이전에 부대로 복귀하는 것이 원칙이다.

군 당국이 연예병사의 휴가를 제한하는 지침을 마련한 것은 가수 비(정지훈 상병)와 배우 김태희의 열애설이 불거지는 과정에서 정 상병의 휴가 일수가 과도하게 많은 것 아니냐는 논란이 일었기 때문으로 풀이된다.

실제 연예병사들은 잦은 포상휴가로 일반병사들보다 많은 휴가를 가는 경향이 있어 왔다.

국방부가 지난해 10월 국회 국방위원회 소속 민주통합당 진성준 의원실에 제출한 자료에 따르면 2009년 11월부터 작년 9월까지 전역한 연예병사 32명의 평균 휴가 일수는 75일로 일반 병사의 평균 휴가 일수 43일(2009~2012년 평균치)의 1.7배에 달했다. (코리아헤럴드)
