South Korean pitcher Lim Chang-yong has signed with the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB), an informed source told Yonhap News Agency Monday.

"Lim Chang-yong signed the contract over the weekend in the U.S.," the source said, requesting anonymity. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately known, according to the source.

Lim is scheduled to return to South Korea later Monday to announce the signing. He is expected to disclose other details of the contract then.

The right-hander flew out to Chicago last Thursday, after claiming that he had agreed to terms with the Cubs and he was traveling there to sign the contract. So far, the Cubs have not given any official confirmation. Lim and his agent, Park Yoo-hyun, had said the deal was a split contract worth up to US$5 million, with different salary rates for the times he spends in the minors and the majors.

Lim, who pitched the last five seasons for the Yakult Swallows in the Central League of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan, is still recovering from Tommy John surgery in July, the second of his career, to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.

He is expected to be out of action for at least the first half of next year.

If Lim makes the major league roster in 2013, he will be the third South Korean player in the big leagues next year, joining outfielder Choo Shin-soo of the Cincinnati Reds and pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers. All three players will be in the National League (NL) and in the case of Lim and Choo, in the same NL Central Division.

Lim claimed the Cubs expect him back on the mound in 2014, and that his goal is to reach the big leagues in the second half of next year.

Lim left the Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) after the 2007 season and joined the Tokyo-based Swallows in 2008. He racked up 128 saves in Japan, the most by a South Korean pitcher there, but didn't record a save in nine appearances this year before coming down with the elbow injury.

Lim put up an 11-13 win-loss record with a 2.09 ERA in his Japanese career. He struck out 231 batters in 233 innings for the Swallows. Lim is best known for his unique arm angle in his delivery; normally a sidearm pitcher, Lim can throw overhand or from a three-quarter angle to change the eye level of opposing hitters. In an NPB game in 2009, Lim touched 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) with his fastball.

Park, the agent, said other major league clubs, including the Boston Red Sox, the Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers, also pursued Lim and that the Cubs offered the second lowest amount of money among all interested clubs. He said Lim opted to go with the Cubs because of their offer to put a personal trainer and a Korean interpreter on their payroll.

After his first Tommy John operation in 2005, Lim needed about two years to return to his dominant form that saw him lead the KBO in saves in three different seasons.

While with the Lions, Lim was posted for interested MLB teams in 2002, but only drew a bid of $650,000 and the Lions declined to accept the bid. Lim had repeatedly said his ultimate career goal was to pitch in the majors. (Yonhap News)

임창용, 컵스와 계약 ‘꿈의무대’ 입성!

미국프로야구 시카고 컵스가 임창용(36)을 원한 이유는 간단하다.

사이드암 투수로 시속 150㎞ 이상의 강속구를 던지는 투수라는 점이 컵스를 매료시켰다.

컵스는 올해 오른쪽 팔꿈치에 메스를 댄 임창용을 2014년 이후 본격 중용할 요량으로 계약을 제안했다.

임창용의 에이전트인 박유현 씨는 13일 임창용과 미국으로 떠나기 앞서 계약 뒷얘기를 공개했다.

그는 컵스 실무자와 협상을 통해 계약기간 '1+1'년에 최대 500만 달러(약 54억원)를 받는 계약을 성사시켰다.

구체적인 계약 내용은 조만간 밝혀지겠으나 임창용이 마이너리그에서 재활을 마치고 빅리그로 진입하는 순간 연봉이 대폭 상승하는 조건이 포함된 것으로 알려졌다.

박 씨는 "컵스와 2년간 950만 달러(102억원)에 계약한 후지카와 규지가 내년 연봉으로 400만 달러(42억원)를 받고 보스턴과 1년 계약한 우에하라 고지의 연봉도 425만 달러(46억원)"라며 "일본에서 최고의 마무리 투수로 활약했던 두 투수에 버금가는 액수에 계약이 이뤄졌다"고 설명했다.

그는 임창용이 재활 중이고 적지 않은 나이임에도 비교적 좋은 조건을 받은 이유로 일본에서 올린 성적을 들었다.

임창용은 야쿠르트 수호신으로 5년을 뛰며 128세이브, 평균자책점 2.09를 남겼다.

임창용은 한국의 최고 소방수로 활약할 당시인 2002년 포스팅시스템(비공개 경쟁입찰)을 거쳐 메이저리그 진출을 노렸으나 입찰금액이 헐값인 65만 달러(7억원)에 그쳐 심하게 좌절했다.

그러나 일본에서 괄목할 만한 성적을 남기면서 미국에서 러브콜을 받고 10년 만에 재도전하는 기회를 얻었다.

그만큼 메이저리그에서 한국과 일본 야구 수준을 보는 시각이 다르다는 것을 의미한다.

박 씨는 "임창용은 사이드암 투수이나 오버핸드, 스리쿼터 등 세 가지 변형 폼으로 공을 던져 타자를 현혹한다"며 "일본에서도 통한 정신력을 컵스 구단에서 높이 산 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.

임창용은 2009년 5월 한신 타이거스와의 경기에서 역대 일본프로야구에서 두 번째로 빠른 시속 160㎞짜리 광속구를 찍었다.

허리 옆으로 공을 던지다가 스리쿼터, 오버핸드로 변화를 주면서 구속을 늘렸다.

포수 미트 근처에서 심하게 요동치는 '뱀 직구'를 앞세워 임창용은 이닝 당 1개꼴로 삼진을 잡았다.

시속 150㎞ 이상을 던지는 옆구리 투수가 희귀한 미국 사정을 고려할 때 임창용이 충분히 통할 수 있다고 컵스는 판단한 셈이다.

박 씨는 "임창용이 컨디션을 완벽하게 회복하는 2014년 이후를 고려해 계약의 주도권을 행사하려는 구단이 여럿 있었다"며 "그러나 재활을 끝내고 내년부터 빅리그 마운드에 설 수 있기 때문에 재활 이후 기용과 관련한 청사진을 제시한 컵스를 새 구단으로 택했다"고 밝혔다.

한편 임창용은 올해 야쿠르트 2군에서 재활하면서 교분을 쌓은 일본인 후리타씨를 개인 트레이너로 컵스에 대동한다. (연합뉴스)
