MEXICO CITY (AFP) - A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico early Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake, which struck at 3:20 am (0920 GMT) some 31 kilometers (19 miles) east of the town of Altamirano, in the southern Guerrero state.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 61 kilometers (38 miles) according to the USGS.

The earthquake came a little over a week after a 7.4-magnitude temblor in neighboring Guatemala killed 48 people and injured another 150, making it the country's most violent earthquake since 1976, when some 23,000 perished.
