"Gangnam Style" star Psy has appeared in a video promoting South Korea's bid to host the secretariat of an international fund aimed at fighting climate change, with his viral song playing in the background alongside promotional images of the bid.
South Korea's Songdo, west of Seoul, is among the six competitors vying for the right to host the secretariat of the Green Climate Fund, a mechanism established in 2010 to channel funds from industrialized nations to help developing countries tackle global warming.
The other competitors are Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Mexico and Namibia. GCF's board will make a tentative decision on the host city in a meeting to be held in Songdo on Friday, and the selection will be approved at next month's U.N. climate change meeting in Qatar.
"I'm very honored to have this opportunity to speak up and to recommend the most potential spot, potential place for GCF, Songdo, where my Gangnam Style video was shot also," Psy said in English at the start of the video. "A new paradigm will begin at Songdo with GCF. Thank you."
The video shows images of Songdo and its preparations to host the GCF secretariat as "Gangnam Style" plays in the background. At one point, Psy shouts for support for Songdo, "with all my hearts and wishes for inviting GCF, here."
The video was produced by South Korea's Presidential Committee on Green Growth, and Psy appeared in it free of charge, officials said. The video can be seen online at http://youtu.be/R6SLIW3NhrA
