A group of 14 US speedskaters are boycotting the national short-track team accusing Korean-born head coach Jae Su Chun with wide ranging physical and verbal abuses, U.S. media reported.

The Chicago Tribune obtained a letter sent Tuesday to U.S. Olympic Committee chief executive Scott Blackmun, in which the group's lawyer demands an investigation so the skaters "are not denied their opportunity to participate in the upcoming World Cup international short-track competitions, free of abuse, both physical and mental, that they have suffered in the hands (literally) of Jae Su Chun and his two assistant coaches."

The letter follows a wider grievance against U.S. Speedskating filed two weeks ago that includes five more speedskaters and a code-of-conduct complaint against Chun with U.S. Speedskating.

According to the Tribune, the athletes involved who are nationally team members have "effectively boycotted" U.S. Speedskating rather than have contact with Chun and assistants Jun Hung Yeo and Jimmy Jang.

"There are obviously serious allegations, and we are working closely with speedskating to look into this and fully understand the issues in this case," USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky told the Tribune on Friday.

The letter to Blackmun followed a filing on August 30 of a grievance against U.S. Speedskating which 19 athletes signed.

And on Thursday the athletes filed a code of conduct complaint against Chun with U.S. Speedskating.

Among the skaters who signed all three were five medalists from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

"U.S. Speedskating takes this grievance very seriously and we intend to investigate each and every allegation," Tamara Castellano, the federation's communications and marketing director, said, according to reports in the Chicago Tribune and the Salt Lake City Tribune.

Chun is alleged to have slammed a skater against a wall before hitting him repeatedly for "disrespecting" the coach.

The alleged abuse also included screamed insults in front of staff members and fellow athletes, tantrums in which chairs and sports equipment were thrown, athletes forced to train despite injury and humiliating treatment that included women being called "fat" and "disgusting" and told to "stop eating," according to the Salt Lake Tribune report.

Chun, who was born in Daegu, South Korea, coached the Korean national team until shortly before the 2006 Olympics. He worked with the Canadian team before he was hired by U.S. Speedskating in 2007. (AFP)

쇼트트랙 스타 김동성이 미국에서 체벌 혐의로 지도자 자격을 박탈당한 데 이어 전재수 미국 쇼트트랙 대표팀 감독이 선수들을 학대했다는 파문에 휩싸였다.

미국 쇼트트랙 국가대표 선수 14명은 전재수 감독으로부터 신체•언어적 "학대"를 당했다면서 미 올림픽위원회 스콧 블랙문 위원장에게 최근 진정서를 제출했다고 미국 시카고트리뷴이 관련자료를 입수해 15일 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 이들은 대표팀 훈련을 거부하고 전 감독을 비롯해 여준형•장권옥(미국명 지미 장) 코치와 어떤 접촉도 하지 않고 있다.

선수들은 이들 3명 모두의 지도자 자격을 박탈해 2012-13 월드컵 대표팀을 맡지 못하게 하도록 요구했다.

이들은 전 감독 등 3명이 지도자로 있는 한 월드컵이나 다른 어떤 대회에서도 대표팀에 있고 싶지 않다는 뜻을 내비쳤다.

전 감독은 22가지 혐의를 받고 있다. 선수들이 낸 문서에 따르면 그는 한 선수를 벽에 밀치고 나서 반복적으로 때렸으며 선수들에게 병, 의자 등의 물건을 던졌다. 또 반복적으로 선수들에게 고함을 지르며 모욕했으며 여자 선수들에게 "뚱뚱하다", "역겹다" 같은 모욕적인 말을 계속했다는 주장도 있었다.

패트릭 샌더스키 미 올림픽위원회 대변인은 "중대한 주장이 있다는 것이 분명하므로 스피드스케이팅연맹과 긴밀히 협력해 이 문제를 조사하고 진상을 파악할 것"이 라고 말했다.

앞서 지난달 30일 쇼트트랙 선수 19명은 미국빙상연맹 쪽에 문서를 보내 연맹의 관리감독에 공식적으로 불만을 표시했으며, 선수들은 이어 지난 13일에는 연맹에 전 감독의 '행동강령 위반'에 대한 진정서를 냈다.

올림픽 위원회와 연맹을 상대로 한 3 가지 문서에 모두 서명한 선수 가운데는 2 010 동계올림픽에서 메달을 딴 5명도 포함됐다.

쇼트트랙 선수들은 빙상연맹이 선수 보호를 위해 아무런 조치도 하지 않았다고 비난했다.

이와관련, 연맹의 타마라 카스테야노 홍보국장은 성명에서 "이 불만을 매우 심각하게 받아들이고 모든 의혹을 조사할 것"이라고 말했다.

전 감독은 2005년 한국 여자쇼트트랙 대표팀 헤드코치로 선임됐다가 몇 달 만에 물러났으며 2007년부터 미국 국가대표 감독을 하고 있다. 전 감독은 미국이 2010년 올림픽에서 메달 6개를 딴 뒤 감독 계약을 4년 연장했다.

한편 한국의 쇼트트랙 간판 스타였던 김동성은 `제자 체벌' 등 18개 부문에 대한 혐의를 받은 끝에 지난 5월 미국 빙상연맹으로부터 지도자 자격 박탈 처분을 받았다.
