Coles, one of Australia’s biggest supermarket chains, is receiving criticism for a job ad that was placed online that read “no Indians or Asians” need apply, according to news sources. The job ad was seeking cleaners for a Coles located near Hobart, the capital of Tasmania.

Indians and Chinese are among the biggest ethnic groups in Australia. 1.4% of the country’s population comes from India, and 1.5% comes from mainland China.

Coles has explained that their cleaning subcontractor placed the ad online without Coles’ consent. Jim Cooper, the company spokesperson, clarified, “Coles is a proud, equal-opportunity employer and at no time have we ever issued the directives contained in this ad.”

Coles has since terminated its contract with the cleaning subcontractor, and the ad has been removed from popular classifieds website Gumtree.

Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Robin Banks said that the ad was “discriminatory on the basis of race” and a breach of Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Act. She said she would investigate to see exactly what happened in the publishing of the ad.

“One of the things we’re trying to encourage in Australia, especially in Tasmania, is for people to do something about it [discrimination], to report it.” Banks revealed that she was led to the ad by a Facebook post on her personal page.

"아시아인은 지원자격 없음" 채용 공고 논란

호주 최대규모의 슈퍼마켓 체인 전문업체 콜스(Coles)가 채용 광고에 인종차별적 문구를 실어 뭇매를 맞고 있다.

콜스의 태즈메이니아주의 호바트 지점은 청소원을 뽑는 온라인 공고에 “인도인이나 아시아인은 지원할 수 없습니다”라고 자격을 제한한 것으로 알려졌다.

특히나 호주에 거주하는 중국인은 전체 인구의 1.5%, 인도인은 1.4%로 인종 집단 중 가장 높은 비율을 차지하고 있어 논란이 거세지고 있다.

콜스의 대변인 짐 쿠퍼는 “콜스는 동등한 기회를 제공하는 고용주이며, 어느 때고 이러한 구인 광고를 내라고 지시한 적이 없다”며 청소 하청업체가 회사의 동의 없이 온라인 상에 공고를 내보낸 것이라고 해명했다.

사건 이후 콜스는 해당 하청업체와 계약을 해지했으며, 공고는 인기 안내광고 사이트 검트리(Gumtree)에서 삭제된 상태다.

태즈메이니아주의 반인종차별 위원인 로빈 뱅스는 이 광고가 “인종에 근거한 차별”이며 반인종차별 법률을 위반한 행위라며  광고를 올리게 된 경위를 정확하게 수사할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

뱅스는 자신의 페이스북 페이지에 뜬 콜스의 공고를 통해 이 사건을 인지하게 되었으며 “우리가 호주 특히 태즈메이니아주에서 장려하는 일중의 하나가 인종차별을 받았을 경우 즉각 신고하라는 것이다"라고 덧붙였다.
