South Korea and the United States have resumed their annual military exercise, the military said Wednesday, one day after the 12-day drill was temporarily halted due to the onset of the powerful Typhoon Bolaven.
"Training related to the Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2012 will resume this morning after a pause due to weather conditions on the peninsula," the Combined Forces Command (CFC) said in a statement.
The computer-simulated exercise has been under way since Aug. 20 to test and improve their defense posture against North Korea, mobilizing some 56,000 South Korean troops and about 30,000 U.S. soldiers, according to military officials.
Typhoon Bolaven killed at least 10 people as it battered the Korean Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday with strong winds and heavy rain, capsizing fishing boats and grounding aircraft. No casualties were reported among armed forces, the CFC said.
The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a cease-fire. About 28,500 U.S. soldiers are stationed here as a legacy of the war. (Yonhap News)
