A new outbreak of the Ebola virus has been reported in Africa, this time in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At least 10 people are reported to have died of the disease in Orientale province in eastern Congo, CNN reported. Two cases of the disease have been confirmed and 13 are suspected.

Orientale borders the area in Uganda where 16 deaths have been attributed to the disease since July 1. But Gregory Hartl, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, said the regions are separated by dense forest without good roads and different strains of the virus are involved.

Ebola, first reported in 1976, spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. Since the symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding, medical workers are vulnerable to infection, and the disease has killed three in the DRC.

Hartl said increased monitoring for Ebola in countries neighboring Uganda might be responsible for the discovery of the DRC outbreak. (UPI)

CNN, UPI등 외신은 21일(현지시간) 콩고민주 공화국에서 에볼라 출혈열 바이러스가 발병한 것으로 민주콩고 보건부가 보고해왔다고 보도했다.

세계보건기구(WHO)에 따르면 민주콩고 보건부가 지난 17일(현지시간) 자국의 동부 지역인 이시로와 둥 구에서 에볼라 출혈열 환자로 보이는 6명이 사망했으며 10명이 발병했다고 통보해왔다고 한다.

환자 2명에게서 채취된 3개의 추출물을 조사한 결과 에볼라 양성반응을 보였다고 WHO는 설명했다.

이 바이러스에 감염되면 유행성출혈열 증세를 보이며, 감염 후 일주일 이내에 50~90%의 치사율을 보인다. 혈관을 통해 모든 장기에 이동, 장애를 일으키며 출혈과 함께 사망에 이르게 한다

이에 앞서 이시로와 접경지대인 우간다 서부 지역에서 지난달 에볼라 환자가 발생해 모두 16명이 숨진 바 있다
