The Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the National Policy Agency announced Monday that they had conducted a crackdown on throwing cigarette butts away while driving in July, and found 1,990 illegal cases.

The policy agency said it imposed a penalty of 30,000 won on each case and that fines would rise to 50,000 won from Sep 1.

The number of reports by citizens reached 836 and the citizens who provided information were given 5,000-10,000 won.

A ministry official said the authority will strengthen the clampdown in the second half of the year.

운전 중 담배꽁초 투기 집중단속!

행정안전부와 경찰청은 지난 7월 한 달 간 차량에서 담배꽁초를 버리는 행위에 대해 집중단속을 벌인 결과 모두 1천990건을 적발했다고 6일 밝혔다.

이번 단속에서 경찰은 모두 1천614건, 지방자치단체는 376건을 적발해 각각 3만원의 범칙금이나 과태료를 부과했다. 범칙금은 다음달부터 5만원으로 오른다.

한달간 시민들의 신고건수는 836건에 달했다. 이 중 행안부의 ‘생활불편 스마트폰 신고’ 앱을 통한 신고가 276건으로 전체의 33%를 차지했다. 나머지 신고는 지방자치단체 홈페이지 등을 통해 들어왔다.

신고를 한 시민에게는 각 지자체의 포상금 규정에 따라 5천~1만원이 지급됐다.

정종제 행안부 행정선진화기획관은 “이달 말까지 운전중 담배꽁초 투기행위를 집중단속하고, 단속의 효과 등을 진단해 하반기에도 집중단속을 한 차례 더 추진할 계획”이라고 말했다.
