A South Korean high school student won the top place in a globally-recognized language competition for the first time, a local academic association said Sunday.

Kim Hong-soon, a 17-year-old from the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, scored the gold medal in the individual round of the 10th International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) held in Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia between July 30 and Aug. 3, according to the Linguistic Society of Korea.

It is the first time a Korean has ranked first in the competition since Korea began taking part in 2008 for the sixth tournament held in Bulgaria.

Two other Korean high school students -- 16-year-old Kim Ji-wook and a 17-year-old Choi Hong-beom -- were each awarded silver medals, the association said.

“It was an opportunity for the students to learn the excellence of our own language through studying those of others,” Chung Hyun-sung, an official from the association, said.

Koreans use Hangul, the Korean alphabet, which was invented by King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

The weeklong tournament, first designed in 2003 to foster talented young students in linguistics, had 135 participants this time representing a total of 39 teams from 27 countries.

It is hosted by a different country every year, but the majority of the events have taken place in Eastern Europe.

The participants were tested on their abilities in linguistical inference and analysis for various languages worldwide, the association added. (Yonhap News)

한국 고교생이 최초로 국제언어학올림피아드에서 우승을 차지했다고 지난 일요일 한국언어학회가 밝혔다.

민족사관고등학교 2학년 김홍순 군은 지난 7월 30일부터 8월 3일까지 슬로베니아에서 개최된 제10회 국제언어학올림피아드에서 개인전 금메달을 차지했다.

한국 학생이 이 대회에서 우승한 것은 지난 2008년 제6회 불가리아 대회에 처음 참가하기 시작한 이래 처음이다.

1위를 차지한 김 군 이외에도 고교 1학년 김지욱 군과 2학년 최홍범 군도 각각 은메달을 차지했다고 학회는 밝혔다.

학회 관계자인 정현성 씨는 “다른 나라의 언어를 공부함으로써 한글의 우수함을 배울 수 있는 좋은 자리였다”고 말했다.

언어 영재 육성을 위해 2003년 기획된 국제언어학올림피아드에는 1주일 간 27개국 출신의 39개 팀이 출전했다. 참가자들은 세계 다양한 언어를 통해 언어학적 능력을 검증 받는다고 학회는 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
