Japan took the silver medal in the men‘s artistic gymnastics team final on Monday after a judges’ inquiry that dropped hosts Great Britain from second to third and denied Ukraine a medal.

A fall from superstar Kohei Uchimura on the pommel horse initially saw Japan finish fourth, but the country appealed against his score of 13.466 points. The score was amended to 14.166 after the judges accepted the appeal, giving Japan silver and leaving Ukraine empty-handed. 

Loath to celebrate after finishing behind China in the team competition for the second consecutive Olympics, Uchimura expressed sympathy for the British and Ukrainian gymnasts.

"For the British people, it‘s not just them. It’s about Ukraine, too, who thought they had a bronze. I feel sorry,” he said, before back-tracking.

"It‘s strange to say that, though. This is just the way the scoring system works, so I shouldn’t feel sorry for them.”

일본, 항의하자 "NO메달이 은메달로"

일본이 월요일(현지시간) 남자 기계체조 단체전에서 항소 끝에 은메달을 따냈다.

심판위원회의 판정 번복에 따라 동메달이 예정되어있던 우크라이나는 메달 순위에서 벗어났으며, 2위였던 영국은 3위로 밀려났다.

일본은 코헤이 우치무라(23)가 안마 경기 중 넘어지는 실수를 범하며 13.466점으로 메달과 멀어졌지만, 결국 심판은 14.166점으로 점수를 수정하며 판정에 항의하는 일본의 손을 들어줬다.

이로써 일본은 은메달 하나를 추가하고, 우크라이나는 빈 손으로 경기장을 떠나게 됐다.

경기를 마친 우치무라는 순위 번복에 대해 “영국 뿐 아니라 동메달을 땄다고 믿었던 우크라이나 선수들에게도 미안하다”며 동정을 표했지만 “이렇게 말하면 이상하지만, 채점 시스템이 그러하니 내가 그들에게 미안해 할 필요는 없다”며 메달 획득의 정당성을 주장했다.
