Kwon Oh-hyun, vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, will head Samsung Display as the chief executive of the world’s largest display panel manufacturer.
Officially launched on Monday, Samsung Display has been formed through mergers of Samsung Electronics’ LCD business division, Samsung Mobile Display and S-LCD.
S-LCD was a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Sony. Sony exited the joint venture last year. Samsung Mobile Display produces OLED panels for mobile devices.
The newly established company has 26,000 employees in Korea and 13,000 overseas with combined annual sales of some 3 trillion won ($2 billion).
It said that Samsung Display, with a slogan of “Displays Beyond Imagination,” will maximize synergy in liquid crystal display and organic light-emitting diode businesses, and further strengthen its capacity in OLED technology.
