South Korean pitcher Lim Chang-yong of the Yakult Swallows in Japan will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ligament in his right elbow, his Seoul-based agent said Thursday.

Park Yu-hyun, Lim's agent, said the right-hander has opted to go under the knife to repair the ligament damage.

"We've informed the team of the decision to undergo surgery today," Park said. "The operation will take place sometime next week at the latest."

This will be Lim's second elbow reconstructive surgery, also known as Tommy John surgery, named after the former major league pitcher. The 36-year-old also had the operation in 2005 and needed almost two years to recover his dominant form that saw him lead the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in saves in three different seasons.

The agent said the Swallows closer may have suffered the injury in a game against the Yomiuri Giants last Friday.

With the team leading 5-2 in the bottom eighth, Lim relieved starter Katsuki Akagawa. But Lim only retired two batters while giving up a walk and two hits.

"Lim told me he felt some heaviness in his pitching arm when he gave up the hits," Park said, adding that doctors the next day found inflammation in Lim's elbow.

Lim then continued to pitch in the minors, and further tests revealed a torn ligament, Park said.

Lim joined the Japanese club before the 2008 season, after pitching 13 seasons for two different teams in South Korea. Lim has racked up 128 saves in Japan, the most by a Korean pitcher there.

Last year, he appeared in 65 games, the highest total since 1999, often pitching in non-save situations. He began this season in the minors and hasn't recorded a save in nine appearances.

Lim's current contract with the Swallows expires at the end of this season, with a mutual option for a third season.

The pitcher's agent said Lim decided to have surgery rather than try to pitch through the pain because he'd like to "go for a bigger challenge," hinting that Lim hopes to test the major league market in the future. (Yonhap News)

임창용 팔꿈치 수술…시즌 아웃


일본프로야구 야쿠르트 스왈로스에서 뛰는 투수 임창용(36)이 팔꿈치 인대가 끊어져 수술대에 오른다.

이에 따라 올 시즌에는 다시 마운드에 오르지 못할 전망이다.

임창용의 에이전트인 박유현 씨는 28일 연합뉴스와의 전화통화에서 "오른쪽 팔꿈치 위쪽의 짧은 인대가 끊어져 수술을 받기로 했다"고 밝혔다.

박 씨는 "오늘 구단에 수술 결정을 통보했고 늦어도 다음 주 안에 수술대에 오를 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

임창용이 팔꿈치를 다친 때는 지난 22일 나가노에서 열린 요미우리 자이언츠와 의 경기로 알려졌다.

당시 임창용은 5-2로 앞선 8회말 선발투수 아카가와 가쓰키에 이어 등판, ⅔이닝 동안 볼넷 한 개와 안타 2개를 내주고 이닝을 마치지 못한 채 마운드를 내려왔다.

첫 타자에게 볼넷을 내준 임창용은 다음 타자를 병살타로 처리했으나 이어 연속 안타를 허용했다.

박 씨는 "안타를 맞았을 때 팔이 묵직하다는 느낌을 받았다고 한다"고 전했다.

임창용은 다음 날 게이오 대학 병원에서 팔꿈치에 염증이 생겼다는 진단을 받았다.

그러나 이후 2군에서 공을 던지면서 계속 이상을 느껴 정밀 검진을 받은 결과 인대가 끊어진 것으로 나타났다.

2008년 일본에 진출한 임창용은 올해까지 계속 야쿠르트에서 뛰면서 '수호신'으로 명성을 떨쳐 왔다.

지난해 무려 65경기에 등판했고 세이브 상황보다는 동점 상황에서 주로 나오는 등 무리한 일정을 소화했다.

그 결과 올해는 봄부터 팔꿈치 통증을 느껴 2군에서 시즌을 시작해야 했다.

임창용은 2005년에도 팔꿈치 수술을 받은 적이 있다.

당시에는 정상적인 몸을 회복하기까지 1년이 걸렸지만 이번에는 재활 기간이 짧아질 것으로 박 씨는 전망했다.

문제는 계약이다.

올해가 야쿠르트와의 '2+1년 계약'의 두 번째 해인 만큼 올 시즌을 마치고 나면 임창용은 자유계약선수로 풀릴 가능성이 크다.

지난 4년간의 활약으로 일본 무대에서 검증을 받은 임창용은 큰 욕심만 내지 않 는다면 야쿠르트뿐만 아니라 다른 구단과도 무난히 계약할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

임창용이 수술을 결심한 배경에는 메이저리그 진출의 꿈도 작용한 것으로 보인다 .

박 씨는 "임창용은 더 큰 도전에 나설 뜻이 있다"며 "참고 뛰어주기를 바라는 구단에는 미안한 일이지만 선수 보호 차원에서 수술을 결정했다"고 전했다.
