Six restaurants have been selling U.S. beef falsely labeled as Australian beef, the Chungnam judicial police said Friday after a month-long investigation into 562 different restaurants.

Also, 48 out of 933 different public eateries including school cafeterias were found to have sold U.S. beef under false labels. Seventeen of these facilities were suspended and thirty fined.

The police have forwarded the case to the prosecutor’s office and are awaiting the results.

Should the allegations be confirmed true, the names of the businesses and the charges faced will be revealed to the public on the city and district websites.

“The police plan to crack down on public health to meet concerns of food poisoning during the summer season,” an official said.

미국산 쇠고기 호주산으로 속인 식당 대거 적발

충남도특별사법경찰은 지난 한달간 도내 일반음식점 562곳을 대상으로 원산지 허위표시 여부를 점검, 미국산 쇠고기를 호주산으로 속여 판매한 6곳을 적발했다고 8일 밝혔다.

특별사법경찰은 적발 업소를 검찰에 송치 중이며, 혐의가 확정되면 시•군 인터넷 홈페이지에 해당 업소와 혐의 내용을 공개할 계획이다.

또 유치원 등 집단급식소 208곳, 청소년유해업소 218곳, 기타 민생분야 관련 시설 507곳을 점검, 48곳을 적발해 영업정지 명령(17곳)과 과태료(30곳), 다른 자치단체 이첩(1곳) 등 행정처분을 했다.

특별사법경찰팀의 한 관계자는 "여름철을 맞아 음식물 섭취로 인한 식중독 발생이 우려되는 만큼 공중위생 분야를 집중단속할 방침"이라고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
