Italy introduces ice cream for dogs

Dogs across Italy are wagging their tails as a new ice cream for man's best friend goes to market.

It's called IceBau and it was released Friday at a gelato festival in Ancona, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

IceBau creators said the product will hit grocery store freezers across Italy this summer.

Meanwhile, Italians chose not to give up ice cream during the country's economic crisis, ANSA reported.

The Italian Institute of Ice Cream, or IGI, reported Friday sales for pre-packaged ice cream increased 2.2 percent in 2011, pulling in about $2.4 billion. Similarly, the IGI found gelato sales were up all year long, not just in the hotter months, with retail sales up 3.9 percent. (UPI)

'개 전용' 아이스크림 첫 시판!

젤라토(Gelato)의 고장 이탈리아에서 개를 위한 아이스크림이 시판된다.

‘아이스 바우’란 이름의 이 애견용 아이스크림은 지난 금요일(현지시각) 안코나에서 열린 젤라토 페스티벌에서 처음으로 소개됐다.

‘아이스 바우’는 올해 여름 이탈리아 전역의 식품점에서 판매될 계획이라고 관계자는 전했다.

한편, 경제위기에도 이탈리아인들의 아이스크림 사랑은 식지 않은 것으로 집계됐다.

이탈리아 아이스크림협회에 따르면 지난 2011년 아이스크림 판매율은 2.2% 상승했으며 이는 24억 달러(약 2조 8천억원)에 상당한다. 

젤라토의 소매 판매율은 3.9% 증가했으며, 더운 계절 뿐 아니라 일년 내내 상승세를 달린 것으로 나타났다.
