Kim outruns Lee in DUP leadership race

Former novelist Kim Han-gill retook the lead in the race to become the next chairman of the opposition Democratic United Party on Wednesday.

He ranked No 1. in the regional vote for Gangwon Province with 179 votes, beating frontrunner Lee Hae-chan, who took third with 82. Former party spokesperson Woo Sang-ho came in second with 166.

In terms of accumulated votes, Kim outstripped Lee by 1,921 to 1,837.

Kim, former floor leader of the liberal opposition, emerged as a dark horse early in the leadership race. He unexpectedly defeated Lee, a top aide to late former President Roh Moo-hyun, especially in Lee’s strongholds such as North Chungcheong Province and Sejong City.

The final vote by the delegates from Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province is on June 9. On the same day, the party will announce the result of the mobile election by citizens and rank-and-file party members, which account for 70 percent of the outcome.

강원도 대의원 대회에서 우상호 후보는 166표로 2위를,이해찬 후보는 82표를 얻어 3위를 기록했다. 이어 추미애(69표)·조정식(61표)·이종걸(53표)·강기정(39표)·문용식(29표) 후보가 뒤를 이었다.
