Beckett's golf outing hot topic as Red Sox return

Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett will take the mound Thursday night at Fenway Park, as controversy swirls around the struggling starter.

With Beckett (2-3, 4.45 ERA) en route back to Boston ahead of his scheduled start vs. Cleveland, manager Bobby Valentine was left in Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday to address reports that Beckett played golf on an off day last week, a day after the team announced he'd be scratched from a start because of back tightness.

"I haven't talked to Josh about this yet, so I'm not sure I can really comment on it,'' Valentine said. ''He had a sore lat. He wasn't an injured player. I know that. We'll take it from there. But I'm sure that Josh wouldn't do anything that's going to jeopardize his team or his season. I know that.''

Beckett's off-the-field decisions have come up before. After last season, it was discovered that he was among a group that ate fried chicken and drank beer in the clubhouse during games. It is common for players to golf during the season, but typically not when one is recovering from an injury.

Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz was his golfing partner. Buchholz declined to comment on the matter Wednesday before the Red Sox lost to the Royals, 4-3. (AP)

'부상 야구선수' 등판 미루고 골프쳐

미국 프로야구 보스턴 레드삭스의 투수 조쉬 베켓이 부상을 이유로 등판 일정을 미룬 다음 날 골프를 친 사실이 드러나 논란이 되고 있다.

AP통신은 보스턴의 보비 밸런타인 단장이 베켓이 지난 5일 골프를 쳤다고 확인 했으며 그날은 베켓이 허리가 아프다며 선발 등판을 취소한 다음 날이라고 보도했다.

베켓은 4일 볼티모어 오리올스와 경기에 선발투수로 나설 예정이었으나 허리에 통증이 있다면서 등판 일정을 바꿨다.

그러나 베켓은 다음날인 5일 동료 투수 클레이 벅홀츠와 골프를 쳤다.

메이저리그 선수들이 시즌 중에 골프를 치는 것은 일상적인 일이지만 부상 중인 선수가 골프를 즐기는 것은 정상적인 일은 아니라고 AP 통신은 전했다.

밸런타인 단장은 "베켓과 이 사안에 대해 아직 얘기하지 않았고 자세한 상황을 몰라서 뭐라고 언급할 단계는 아니다"라면서 "크게 다친 게 아니라 사소한 통증이 있다고 해서 무리하지 말라고 쉬게 한 것"이라고 말했다.

벅홀츠는 언론의 취재에 응하지 않았다.

베켓은 작년에도 자신이 등판하지 않은 경기가 열리고 있는 동안 클럽하우스에 서 치킨을 곁들인 맥주 파티를 벌인 적이 있다.
