The KBO’s board of directors -- comprised of presidents of the current eight teams -- approved the addition in a meeting Tuesday.

The Lotte Giants were the only club to oppose the proposal, according to reports.

NCsoft, an online game developer, set up the NC Dinos in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province in 2011. Its initial goal was to make it into the country’s top league in 2014, but NC Dinos officials announced it was ready to join the season in 2013, submitting a proposal to the KBO.

NCsoft has finished rebuilding the Masan Baseball Stadium, investing roughly 10 billion won ($8.8 million).

The board also reviewed a proposal to launch a 10th team but decided to put it on hold.

“Many are of the opinion that there needs to be a 10th team. However, they have decided to more closely review the proposal,” said a KBO official.

“It is unclear whether or not we will go with nine clubs for a year or two years, but I believe we need to keep this time as short as possible,” said KBO Secretary General Yang Hae-young.

At the moment Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, and North Jeolla Province are looking into forming a 10th team with corporations.

Baseball is one of the most popular professional sports in Korea. In 2011, the KBO drew some 6.8 million fans, breaking an all-time season high. Stadiums have seen more than 1.3 million people hit the stands since the season began on April 7.

프로야구, 내년부터 9개 구단 경합!

프로야구 제9구단인 NC 다이노스가 내년부터 1군 무대에 합류한다.

이에 따라 내년 시즌 페넌트 레이스에서는 작년 8월 김경문 초대 감독 체제로 출범한 NC와 기존 8개 구단을 합쳐 총 9개 구단이 경합을 벌이게 된다.

한국야구위원회(KBO)는 8일 서울 도곡동 야구회관에서 제4차 이사회를 열어 NC의 내년 1군 진입 안을 가결했다.

이 안건 표결에서는 기존 8개 구단 가운데 롯데만 유일하게 반대했다.

지난 3월 창단 승인을 얻은 NC는 원래 2014년 1군 진입을 신청했다가 제반 여건 이 충분히 갖춰졌다는 이유를 들어 1군 진입 시기를 내년으로 변경해 줄 것을 요청했었다.

그러자 롯데 등 일부 구단이 강하게 반대해 논란이 일었고 결국 이날 이사회에서 NC의 1군 진입 시기를 내년으로 1년 앞당기는 것으로 최종 확정했다.

KBO 이사회는 NC의 구체적인 선수 수급 방안에 대해서는 실행위원회가 결정하도록 위임했다.

이날 회의에 또 다른 안건으로 올라온 제10구단 창단 문제에 대해서는 추후 다시 논의키로 했다.

KBO 관계자는 "10구단 체제로 가는 것이 기본적으로 올바른 방향이라는 데 의견이 모아졌지만 좀 더 다각적으로 심층 검토해 신중하게 결정하기로 했다"고 말했다.

현재 수원시와 전북도가 기업들과 손잡고 10구단 창단을 추진 중이다.

이날 수원시민연대는 야구회관 앞에서 "올 6월 10구단이 창단될 수 있을 만큼 준비 작업이 빠르게 진행되고 있다"며 수원을 연고지로 하는 10구단 창단이 이뤄져야 한다고 주장했다.

한편 KBO는 중•고교야구 활성화를 위해 좀 더 적극적으로 지원하고 선수들을 위한 야구장 시설 개선, 관객들을 위한 쾌적한 환경 조성 및 선수 일자리 창출 방안 등을 활발하게 모색해 나가기로 했다.

이날 이사회에는 구본능 KBO 총재와 이태일 NC 사장을 포함한 9개 구단 사장이 모두 참석했다.
