Using this technology, computers can identify basic emotions such as like, dislike, confusion by taking information about people’s faces via camera and analyzing how they move over time.

Researchers said they can apply this technology in many ways. For example, it’s possible to gather information on people’s responses to advertisements by looking at how many times they smiled or frowned. Medically, it can help people with autism better read expressions.

Coupled with wearable devices like an electronic bracelet that can measure sweat level to determine if you are excited or stressed, it opens up a whole new perspective concerning digitized non-verbal communication.

“Emotion measurement technology will be soon ubiquitous … It will allow people to communicate in new different ways,” said research scientist Rana El Kaliouby.
