South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday that it will launch a new 7-inch tablet computer next month in a bid to further tap into the smart device market.
The company said that it will launch the Galaxy Tab 2 in global markets next month, starting with its debut in Britain. Its newest tablet computer will be run on the most up-to-date version of the Android operating system, called Ice Cream Sandwich.
Currently, Samsung Electronics has a lineup of 10.1-inch tablet computers named Galaxy Tab 10.1 and its revised version, the Galaxy Tab 10.1N.
Samsung Electronics said it will showcase the new tablet computer at the world's largest trade show in the mobile industry, titled the Mobile World Congress. The trade fair will be held from Feb. 27 to March 1 in Barcelona, Spain.
The Korean firm is making efforts to meet growing demand for smart devices, including smartphones, as sales of conventional handsets and personal computers are losing steam.
Late last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note, which combines the strength of a smartphone with a tablet computer. Its local rival LG Electronics is set to release a new 5-inch smart device similar to the Galaxy Note. (Yonhap News)

삼성전자가 유럽에서 7인치 '갤럭시탭2 '를 공개했다.
삼성전자는 13일(현지시간) 체코 프라하에서 열린 쇼케이스에서 최신 안드로이드 운영체제(OS)인 4.0 '아이스크림 샌드위치'를 탑재한 갤럭시탭2를 공개했다고 밝혔다.
안드로이드 OS 가운데 처음으로 스마트폰과 태블릿PC를 동시에 지원하는 '아이 스크림샌드위치'를 적용한 만큼 안드로이드 애플리케이션(앱) 장터에서 스마트폰• 태블릿PC 구별 없이 쓸 수 있는 앱 40만개를 이용할 수 있게 됐다.
갤럭시탭2는 1㎓ 듀얼코어 칩을 적용하고 300만화소 카메라를 달았으며, 제품에 따라 8~32GB(기가바이트) 내장 메모리를 장착했다. 화면 크기는 7인치이며 해상도는 1024×600(WSVGA), 무게는 344ｇ이다.
이 제품은 영국 런던을 시작으로 3월부터 유럽 시장에 순차적으로 출시할 계획 이며 국내 출시 여부와 일정은 아직 결정되지 않았다.
신종균 삼성전자 IM(IT•모바일)담당 사장은 "2년 전 '갤럭시탭'을 출시한 이후 삼성은 다양한 크기로 태블릿PC 라인업을 향상시켰다"며 "갤럭시탭2는 즐거운 멀티 미디어 경험과 효과적인 통신을 가능하게 할 것"이라고 말했다.
제품은 최고 21Mbps(초당 메가비트) 속도를 낼 수 있는 고속패킷접속플러스(HSP
A+)를 지원하는 3세대(3G) 모델과 무선랜 접속만 지원하는 와이파이(Wi-Fi) 모델로 나뉘어 출시된다.
