The Korea Herald has recently introduced a new application for the iPad, joining the drive to produce digital news customized for the rapidly growing number of tablet users.
The latest mobile version of the country’s leading English daily also offers a multimedia tool for learning and practicing English through news.
Harnessing rapidly developing media technologies, the company has been stepping up efforts to provide a variety of multimedia-rich content and improved user experiences.
Its news content has been available on Samsung Electronics’ e-book reader and Galaxy Tab since 2010. The company launched its app for the iPhone early last year, drawing widespread interest from readers in and outside the country.
The new iPad app offers headline news, in-depth stories and news updates in real time as well as PDF versions of the printed daily. Users can share all news content with friends via e-mail and social network services such as Facebook and Twitter.
Based on The Korea Herald’s 59 years of experience in providing English news and education, the iPad app offers readers a chance to learn English while reading and listening to news stories and editorials accompanied by Korean translations and lectures.
The Korea Herald is one of the first major newspapers in Korea to launch an app based on HTML 5, an innovative and latest generation Web language.
With the HTML 5 news app, users can check new updates and features immediately. By having one core codebase, the app can also be rolled onto multiple platforms. The technology allows the app to fit with other mobile or tablet devices run on the android operating system.
The iPad service is currently available for $9.99 a month.
To mark the app’s launch, The Korea Herald will hold a promotional event from today until March 31. IPad users who write comments about the app on the Korea Herald homepage or their blogs or microblogs after downloading the app will get the chance to win free pizzas from Domino’s or a Mini MacBook. They should leave URLs of their blogs on the Korea Herald site.
