Canadian returns to Korea to confess girlfriend’s murder

Police plan to seek an arrest warrant Tuesday for a former expat who returned to Korea to confess the murder of his girlfriend.

According to Yongsan Police Station, the 38-year-old Canadian confessed Saturday to the murder of his Korean girlfriend three years ago, which was initially ruled a suicide.

Police said the expat confessed he had suffered from paranoia believing that his girlfriend was planning to have him murdered after the couple began to fight over religious differences and marriage issues.

Police say that he dragged his 21-year-old girlfriend, surnamed Kim, into the Han River near Ichon and drowned her on March 23, 2009.

He entered the country in 2001 and taught English at a North Jeolla Province university, and started dating Kim in January 2009.

During the initial investigation, he had told police that Kim drowned trying to retrieve a tennis ball from the Han River.

Police were unable to uncover any evidence against him and found no signs of foul play during the initial autopsy.

He left for Canada two days after the incident.

However, according to police, he continued to suffer from the guilt of the murder and images of Kim kept tormenting him.

“The perpetrator tried to repent the act through prayer but continued to be haunted by the images of his girlfriend, and decided that confessing to the victims family and being brought to justice here would help him escape the pain,” said one police official.

3년전 익사로 종결된 사건이 범인의 자수로 살 인사건이었던 것으로 밝혀졌다.

서울 용산경찰서는 여자친구가 자신을 죽일 것이라는 피해망상 때문에 애인을 살해한 혐의(살인)로 캐나다인 C모(38)씨에 대해 구속영장을 신청할 예정이라고 17 일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 C씨는 2009년 3월 23일 오후 8시17분께 용산구 이촌동 거북선 나 루터 인근에서 대학생 김모(당시 21ㆍ여)씨를 물속으로 끌고 들어가 머리를 잡아 눌러 익사시킨 혐의를 받고 있다.

2001년에 한국에 들어와 전북에 있는 대학교에서 영어강사로 일하던 C씨는 2009 년 1월부터 사귀던 김씨와 결혼문제를 두고 종교적 차이 때문에 갈등이 있었으며 김 씨가 사람들을 시켜 자신을 죽일 것이라는 피해망상에 시달려 범행한 것으로 드러났 다.

사건 당시 C씨는 "김씨가 한강에 빠진 테니스공을 건지려고 들어갔다 익사했다"라고 범행을 부인했으며 부검에서도 타살혐의가 발견되지 않아 사건 발생 이틀 뒤 캐나다로 출국했다.

경찰 관계자는 "당시에도 심증이 가니까 자백을 받아내려고 노력했고 국립과학 수사연구원에서 부검했지만 강제수사할 혐의나 증거를 발견하지 못해 익사 소견으로 내사종결했다"고 밝혔다.

기독교인인 C씨는 캐나다에 돌아간 이후 범행 당시 피해자의 모습이 계속 떠오 르고 양심의 가책을 받는 등 심리적 고통에 시달려 종교생활에 귀의했다가 지난 14 일 입국했다.

그는 한국 생활 당시 알게된 미국인 목사를 찾아가 범행을 털어놓고서 피해자의 가족에 연락했고 지난 16일 목사와 김씨의 어머니와 함께 용산경찰서를 찾아 자수했 다.

이날 오후 언론 촬영을 위해 잠시 모습을 드러낸 C씨는 "나는 사건에 대해 솔직 하게 증언하기 위해 왔다"고 말했으며 촬영이 끝나자 자기 입장을 충분히 밝히지 못 했다며 항의했다.

경찰 관계자는 "피의자가 기도하면서 회개를 해도 범행에 대한 환상에 계속 시 달리다 보니 피해자의 가족들에게 고백하고 한국법에 의해 처벌받는 것이 고통에서 벗어나는 길이라 생각해 자수했다"고 설명했다. (연합뉴스)
