Golfer Choi Kyoung-ju's wife sues foundation employee for embezzlement

The wife of PGA Tour golfer Choi Kyoung-ju has sued an employee of Choi's charity foundation and an insurance broker for embezzlement, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said Choi's wife, surnamed Kim, has claimed that the KJ Choi Foundation employee and the insurance salesman colluded to embezzle 2.2 billion won (US$1.9 million) of Kim's insurance money and bank deposits.

Kim has also alleged that the two individuals forged bank documents to misappropriate her money, prosecutors added.

They said the employee, surnamed Park, and the insurance broker, surnamed Cho, are under investigation. Prosecutors said they also plan to meet Kim in the near future to verify information pertaining to the investigation.

The foundation was set up in 2007, named after Choi's more famous initial on the PGA Tour, to offer financial aids and scholarships for young golfers and other underprivileged youths.

Choi, 41, is the first South Korean to win on the PGA Tour and has eight wins in his career, the most ever among South Koreans. In 2011, he finished a career-high fourth on the PGA Tour money list with more than $4.4 million. (Yonhap News)

골퍼 최경주 부인, 최경주복지회 직원 고소

서울중앙지검 조사부(박규은 부장검사)는 프로 골퍼 최경주(41)씨의 부인 김모씨가 ㈔최경주복지회의 경리담당 직원 등 2명을 횡령 혐의로 고소해 수사중이라고 28일 밝혔다.

김씨는 고소장에서 경리 직원 박모씨와 보험설계사 조모씨가 서로 짜고 김씨의 노후 연금보험과 은행예금 등 22억원 상당을 횡령했다고 주장한 것으로 전해졌다.

김씨는 이들이 자금 횡령을 위해 예금거래신청서 등 관련 문서도 위조했다고 주장하고 있다.

검찰은 고소내용을 검토한 뒤 조만간 김씨를 불러 고소 취지 및 사실관계를 확인할 계획이다.

지난 2007년 설립된 최경주복지회는 골프 주니어 지원을 비롯해 지역사회 발전을 위한 각종 사업을 펼치고 있다.
