The main opposition Democratic Party on Saturday launched a committee to investigate the possible involvement of a ruling party lawmaker in the hacking of the national election watchdog's Web site.

The move came after the National Police Agency said Friday it is seeking arrest warrants for a former aide to Rep. Choi Ku-sik of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) and three website administrators on suspicion of attacking the server of the National

Election Commission on the day of the October by-elections.

The DP suspects the GNP may have orchestrated the cyber attack to gain favorable results in the Oct. 26 vote in which Park Won-soon, an opposition-backed independent candidate, was elected Seoul mayor.

Choi has flatly denied his involvement in the hacking scheme.

The committee, comprising more than 10 DP lawmakers, will hold its first meeting on Sunday, according to party officials.

"The cyber attack was an act of terrorism against democracy and an open challenge to the basic order of the country," said DP spokesman Lee Yong-sup. "It is difficult to believe that an aide in his late 20s carried out the crime on his own. (We should) reveal the (forces) behind the case through a thorough investigation."

The 27-year-old aide, surnamed Kong, worked as Choi's personal driver before recently leaving office because of health problems, according to Choi.

Police said they are also investigating the suspects' possible involvement in cyber attacks on Park's Web site, which also took place on polling day.
