Ahn Cheol-soo says he acted on long-dreamed goal of donation

Star computer software entrepreneur Ahn Cheol-soo said Tuesday his decision to make a massive donation of personal wealth was a long-held dream of his but declined to comment on whether the decision is related to his political ambitions.

Ahn, the founder of South Korea's No. 1 anti-virus software firm AhnLab, announced Monday that he will donate about 150 billion won (US$133 million), or half of his 37 percent stake in the firm, to charity, saying he hopes to use the money to help educate children of low-income families.

In recent months, Ahn has been considered a potential candidate for next year's presidential election, and Monday's announcement spurred speculation that he is commencing his political life. One leading daily called the decision Ahn's way of throwing his hat into politics.

"I just converted what I have long thought about into action,"

Ahn told reporters. "I have talked a lot about social responsibility and social contribution in my lectures and books, and I put that into action."

Ahn spoke at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology in Suwon, south of Seoul, where he serves as a professor. He then left without answering questions, mostly about his plan about next year's presidential election.

Ahn has remained vague whether he will run in next year's presidential race, despite repeated offers from both conservative and liberal camps that are grappling with growing voter disillusion with existing major political parties.

The doctor-turned-entrepreneur gained fame in the 1990s after establishing the anti-virus software firm, widely popular among young Koreans, due largely to his clean and upright image.

Ahn was seen as a critical factor in the October mayoral election as he helped lawyer-turned-activist Park Won-soon score a surprise victory over his ruling party rival. Park's approval ratings soared in September after Ahn gave up his mayoral bid to throw support behind the political novice.

안철수 서울대 융합과학기술대학원장이 사실상의 대권 행보에 나선 것으로 보인다. 안 원장은 10ㆍ26 재보선 이후 20여일 만인 15일 기자들 앞에 섰다.

그의 메시지와 발언 어디에도 ‘정치’는 없지만, 그의 행동 하나하나는 ‘기성 정치가 실천하지 못했던 정치들’로 가득 찼다. 그래서인지 정치권에서는 안 원장이 정치권 진입을 위해 입장료를 냈다는 시각도 있다.

전날 밝힌 사재 안철수연구소 지분 50%(시가 약 1700억원) 사회 환원을 설명하기 위해 언론 앞에 선 안 원장은 안철수 신당이나 야권 통합 등 정치 현안에 대해서는 ‘예상대로’ 입을 닫았다. 대신 “단지 오래전부터 생각해왔던 일을 실행에 옮긴 것뿐이다. 제가 강의라든지 책을 통해서 사회에 대한 책임, 사회 공헌 말씀을 많이 드렸는데, 그 일을 행동으로 옮긴 것뿐”이라며 그렇게 이해해 달라고 했다. ‘단지 오래전부터 생각해왔던 일’이라고 확대해석을 경계했지만, 그가 말한 ‘사회에 대한 책임’ 속에는 시대의 정치가 풀어야 할 모든 과제들이 녹아 있다.

실제로 안 원장은 전날 직원들에게 보낸 e-메일에 더불어 희망을 품고 살아가는 사회, 나눔, 무너진 중산층의 삶, 젊은 세대의 좌절, 사회적ㆍ경제적 불평등, 노블레스 오블리주 등을 담았다. 단어 하나하나가 ‘대권주자급’ 고민이 고스란히 묻어 있다. 그는 e-메일을 통해 “오늘 우리 사회가 안고 있는 수많은 문제의 핵심 중 하나는 가치의 혼란과 자원의 편중된 배분이며, 그 근본에는 교육이 자리하고 있다”며 사회불평등의 고착화와 양극화에 대한 고민, 그리고 근본적인 해결책으로서의 교육 문제를 구체적으로 언급했다.

계파, 신당, 선거구도 등 기성 정치의 방식으로 정치를 말하진 않았지만, 그가 손수 쓴 편지 한 장에는 이처럼 공감정치의 메시지가 담겨 있다. 평소 고민해온 양극화나 사회불평등에 대한 문제의식을 갑론을박 없이 사재 환원으로 조용히 실천한 것도 기성 정치권과 그를 경계 짓는 눈에 띄는 대목이다. 더불어 사는 삶, 나눔의 미덕은 그가 평소 강조해온 가치다. 그는 평소 “성공을 100% 개인화해서는 안 된다”며 “자신이 왜 이 일을 하는지에 대한 그런 의식이 중요하다. 자신의 추구하는 성공에는 사명감이 밑바탕돼야 한다”고 말해왔다.

이용섭 민주당 대변인은 “안 원장은 앞으로 본인이 정치를 하든 안 하든 이미 우리 사회에 보탬이 되는 ‘큰 정치’를 하고 있다”고 평가했다. 박원순 서울시장은 안 원장의 대권 행보에 대해 “안철수 교수가 정치를 할지 안 할지 그건 저도 잘 모르겠지만, 만약 정치를 한다면 새로이 변화된 통합적인 야당에 들어오도록 그렇게 할 수 있는 것”이라고 말했다. (양춘병ㆍ조민선 기자)
