Gang members infiltrated U.S. forces in S. Korea: FBI

SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) -- American gang members have signed up for the U.S. military forces stationed in South Korea, a recent U.S. gang assessment report showed Monday, posing possible criminal threats to local law enforcement.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in the October report that the military has seen members from at least 53 gangs enlist in the armed forces at both U.S. and international military installations, including South Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany and Japan. 

The FBI report claimed that enlisted street gangs have smuggled drugs and arms in their local branches, sometimes persuading the servicemen's colleagues and family members to join the criminal plots.

The report named the Korean descent street gang known as the "Korean Dragon Family," but it did not give the specific number of gang members that are enlisted in South Korea.

About 28,500 U.S. soldiers serve in South Korea. Their presence is a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, and left the two Koreas technically at war.

미군 내에 조직폭력배(갱단) 다수가 잠입해 있으며 주한미군에도 이들이 몰래 들어와 마약밀매나 무기 밀반출 등 범죄를 저지르는 것으로 7일 알려졌다.

미 연방수사국(FBI) 산하 국립 갱 정보센터(GNIC)가 지난달 발간한 '갱 평가 보고서'에 따르면 4월 현재 최소 53개의 갱단이 미군에 잠입해 활동하고 있다. 이 가운데는 한국계로 추정되는 '코리안 드래곤 패밀리'도 포함돼 있다.

보고서는 아프가니스탄과 이라크, 독일, 일본, 한국 등 해외 주둔지에도 잠입했으며 현지에서 마약 밀매와 무기 밀반출을 저지르고 있다고 밝혔다.

실제로 최근 국내에서 적발된 주한미군 마약 밀매에도 보고서에 적힌 한 갱단이 연루된 것으로 전해졌다.

보고서는 이들이 트럭 뒷면에 고유 구호를 쓰고 다니거나 손가락으로 갱 고유의 표시를 하기도 한다고 전했다.

또 갱단이 동료는 물론 군인 가족과 군무원까지 포섭하고, 심지어 전과가 없는 어린 조직원을 선발해 입대시킨 뒤 고도의 실전 군사기술을 익히는 사례까지 있다고 지적했다.
