Change of stance seen as move to make up for image tarnished by mudslinging

The race for Seoul mayor is to intensify this week as liberal candidate Park Won-soon set to launch aggressive counterattacks against the ruling party’s negative campaigning.

The liberal bloc’s unified candidate, together with the main opposition Democratic Party, on Monday ratcheted up criticism of the ruling Grand National Party and its candidate Na Kyung-won.

“Negative and false propaganda is a specialty of the GNP,” said Park during his campaign tour on Monday afternoon.

He also referred to Na as an imitation of former Mayor Oh Se-hoon and blamed him for insisting on depriving students of free school meals.

The liberal candidate also attacked the GNP.

“I am skeptical of how the GNP could accuse me of military evasion, real estate speculation and academic record forgery, considering its history of law violations and irregularities,” he said.

The strong words were in contrast to the civic activist’s previously defensive attitude.

“The reason I challenged politics was in order to suggest an alternative to the current Lee Myung-bak administration and its poor achievements,” said Park.

“Though I first hesitated to take this rugged path, I am now to dedicate myself fully to the mission, no matter how harsh.”

While countering the GNP’s accusations, the liberal candidate also continued to promote welfare policies such as free school meals and daycare.

Park’s rival Na, on the other hand, focused on touring Seoul’s northern districts and stressed her policy of cutting credit card commission fees to help small-sized enterprises.

“Should I be elected mayor, I shall strongly back small-sized manufacturers and sellers,” Na said.

She also visited a nursery and highlighted her daycare policies, claiming that childcare welfare plans would be her top priority as Seoul’s mayor.

Na also suggested that she and Park confront each other in an in-depth open forum before next Wednesday’s final showdown.

“Na seems to be a confident speaker but I am a man of actions,” Park said in response.

Na has been steadily catching up with Park in most of the recent public polls.

In a survey by Hankyoreh on Monday, Na won 51.3 percent of the respondents’ votes, beating Park by 5.5 percent.

Though she is ranked second in other polls, the figures were a considerable change from Park’s sweeping lead in the early stages of the mayoral race.

부동산 투기ㆍ감사배제 청탁 의혹 부각시켜

범야권 박원순 서울시장 단일후보 측은 18일 한나라당 나경원 후보에 대해 부친 소유 학교의 감사배제 청탁 의혹, 부동산 투기 의혹 등을 환기시키며 맹공에 나섰다.

한나라당의 네거티브 공세에 대응하지 않았던 전략을 바꿔 사실상 역공에 나선 것이다.

박 후보측 우상호 대변인이 총대를 메고 거침없이 공격을 가했다.

그는 국회 브리핑에서 17대 국회의원 시절 나 후보에게서 부친 학교에 대한 감 사배제 청탁을 받았다고 주장한 정봉주 전 의원이 "로비를 받았고 압력을 느꼈고 실 제로 보좌관을 통해 알아봤다"고 한 데 대해 "나 후보는 도대체 아버지 학교에 어떤 문제가 있어 감사받는 것을 두려워 했는지, 그리고 그 감사에서 무엇을 빼달라고 부 탁한 것인지 스스로 밝혀야 한다"고 말했다.

우 대변인은 "국회의원 신분으로서 사적으로 자기 친인척 관련된 청탁을 하는 것은 금지돼 있다"며 "나 후보는 직접 부친 학교의 문제점에 대해 국민에게 밝혀야 한다"고 주장했다.

또한 그는 나 후보가 2004년 17대 총선 후보자 시절 신당동 건물을 매입했다 지 난해 13억원의 시세차익을 보고 매각한 것과 관련해 "투기가 아니다"라고 말한 데 대해 "이게 부동산 투기가 아니면 무엇이 부동산 투기인가"라고 반문했다.

이어 "경기도 성남의 토지도 매입 이후 두 배나 올랐다고 하는데 나 후보는 공 직자 시절에 부동산 투자에 너무 몰두한 것이 아닌지 묻지 않을 수 없다"고 비꼬았 다.

우 대변인은 나 후보 부친 학교의 교사들이 후원금을 낸 사실에 대해서도 의혹 의 시선을 보냈다.

그는 "전교조 교사들이 민주노동당을 후원한 일로 고발당해 재판을 받으며 고통 받고 있는데 법조인 출신 나 후보가 이 사실을 잘 모르겠다고 회피하는 것은 있을 수 없는 일"이라며 "아버지 학교 교사들이 몇 명이나 후원금을 냈는지, 그 총액이 어느 정도인지, 자발적으로 냈는지 부친의 강요로 냈는지 소상히 밝혀야 한다"고 말 했다. (연합뉴스)
