Apple sells 4M-plus new iPhone models in 3 days

NEW YORK (AP) _ Apple Inc. on Monday said it sold more than 4 million units of the new iPhone model in three days _ meaning it's selling more than twice as fast as the previous model did when it launched last year.

Apple and its phone company partners started selling the iPhone 4S on Friday in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Britain. They are coming to 22 more countries by the end of the month.

When Apple launched the iPhone 4 last year, it sold 1.7 million in the first three days.

There are two more launch countries than last year, and there are also more phone companies that sell the phone. In the U.S., Sprint Nextel Corp. is the new carrier, joining AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless.

On Friday, both AT&T and Sprint said the new phone had broken sales records. At Verizon Wireless, a lot of pent-up iPhone demand was satisfied with the February launch of the iPhone 4, the first iPhone for that company.

Apple shares fell $1.54 to $420.46 in afternoon trading, after hitting a new all-time high of $426.70 earlier in the session.

애플 "아이폰4S, 사흘간 400만대 이상 판매"

애플은 지난 14일 오프라인 매장에 새로 선보인 아이폰4S가 사흘간 400만대 이상 판매됐다고 17일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

이는 지난해 아이폰4 출시 이후 같은 기간 170만대가 판매된 것에 비해 배 이상 늘어난 것이다.

애플은 지난 사흘간 미국과 호주, 캐나다, 프랑스, 독일, 일본, 영국 등 1차 출 시국 7개국에서 아이폰4S를 판매해 왔다. 이는 지난해 아이폰4 판매 때보다 2개국이 늘어난 것이다.

이와 함께 지난해에 비해 아이폰4S를 판매하는 이동통신업체들도 늘었으며, 미국에서는 수프린트넥스텔에서 이번에 처음으로 애플의 스마트폰을 판매하기 시작했다.

아이폰4S는 디자인이 기존 제품인 아이폰4와 유사하지만, 속도가 빨라진 프로세 서와 성능이 강화된 카메라, 새로운 음성인식소프트웨어 '시리' 등 기능이 업그레이 드됐다는 평가를 받았다.

애플의 글로벌 제품마케팅담당 수석 부사장 필립 실러는 보도자료를 통해 "아이폰4S가 쾌조의 출발을 하고 있다"고 말했다.

애플은 지난 12일 출시된 모바일 운영체제(OS) iOS5도 2천500만명 이상이 이용하고 있고, 애플 제품에서 이용할 수 있는 클라우드 기반 스토리지인 아이클라우드 이용자도 2천만명이나 되는 것으로 집계됐다고 덧붙였다.
