N. Korean leader's grandson enrols at Bosnia college

The grandson of reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has enrolled to study at a college in Bosnia amid intense interest in the bespectacled 16-year-old whose father fell out of favour with Pyongyang in 2001.

Kim Han-Sol, described as charismatic and idealistic by one schoolmaster, turned to the school in the once war-torn town of Mostar after failing to secure a visa to study in Hong Kong.

South Korean news media earlier this month splashed photos of a fashionably-dressed teenager with dyed orange hair whom they believed to be Han-Sol although their authenticity has not been confirmed. The pictures were retrieved from a Facebook account that has since been blocked.

The United World Colleges (UWC) school in Mostar on Friday attempted to dampen down interest in Han-Sol, stressing that he would not receive any special treatment during his two-year stint at the college.

"The person is a minor and is not in public business... he is a regular student like all the others. He will have the same conditions, the same accommodation, the same food," school official Jasminka Bratic told a packed press conference.

"The pupil has arrived... he got all necessary permits to stay in our school for the next two years," she added.

Bratic urged reporters to respect Han-Sol's privacy so he could receive his education in a normal environment.

"We are obliged to provide our students education, security and privacy," she said.

Students in the town were also eager to know more about Han-Sol.

"When I heard I could not believe it since he is coming from a completely isolated country," Tomislav Andric, 18, told AFP.

"I'm very curious and would like to meet him as soon as possible," added Andric who attends a school located in the same building as the UWC.

According to the school, the enrolment of the grandson of the leader of one of the most isolated countries in the world was the result of a UWC outreach programme for North Korea.

It was not known exactly why Han-Sol chose to study in Bosnia.

But a school spokeswoman confirmed previous reports that although he was accepted by a UWC school in Hong Kong his visa request was turned down despite several attempts.

"He passed the admission exam... but the Hong Kong authorities refused to give him a residence visa so we offered him the chance to attend this school," the Mostar UWC spokeswoman, Meri Musa, told AFP.

Former Hong Kong school principal Stephen Codrington, who interviewed Han-Sol, described him as a "lovely kid, very bright, charismatic" with "good English" and a "good sense of idealism", the South China Morning Post reported earlier.

Han-Sol will attend English language classes in chemistry, physics, mathematics or economics at the school with around 120 other students, aged between 16 and 18.

The students sleep, eat and spend their leisure time in a building in another part of the town.

Han-Sol's father is Kim Jong-Nam, the North Korean leader's exiled eldest son. The pair are said to have been living in Macau, southern China.

Jong-Nam apparently dropped out of contention as a future leader after he was caught sneaking into Japan with a bogus passport in 2001 with a woman and child believed to be his wife and his son.

He reportedly said he wanted to visit Tokyo Disneyland.

All three sons of Kim Jong-Il studied in Europe when they were teenagers, including Swiss-educated Kim Jong-Un, now tapped to succeed his father as North Korean leader.

The UWC is a network of school and colleges throughout the world, attended notably by pupils from war-affected areas, and aimed at promoting international and intercultural understanding.

Mostar was the scene of violent clashes between the country's Croats, Muslims and Serbs during its 1992-1995 war.

Sixteen years since the end of the war it still remains a symbol of inter-ethnic divisions in the Balkan country.

"Maybe Han-Sol and pupils coming from other countries will unite us (Croats and Muslims) here in Mostar," 16-year-old student Sanela Dzeba told AFP.

김한솔, 개인 경호원 없는 유학생활

보스니아 국제학교에 입학한 김정일 북한 국방위원장의 손자 김한솔(16)은 노출된 신분에도 불구하고 개인 경호원이 없는 가운데 유학 생활을 시작했다.

2년간의 학업을 위해 옛 유고연방인 보스니아에 온 그는 현지에서 개인 경호원없이 지낼 것으로 추측되고 있다. 그에게서 경호원이 없는 불안감 같은 건 느껴지지 않았다.

김 군이 선택한 이 국제학교는 학비가 기숙사비를 포함해 2년간 총 2만5천유로 라고 학교 측은 밝혔다.

그러나 메리 무사 학교 대변인은 14일(현지시간) 낮 연 기자회견에서 "학생 대부분이 장학금을 받는다"며 "장학금은 학교 측에서 조달하는데 노르웨이에서 기여를 많이 한다"고 설명했다.

무사 대변인은 김 군이 장학생인지를 묻자 "대답할 수 없다"고 잘라 말했다. 그녀는 그가 정말 김 위원장의 손자인지를 확인하는 질문에도 "가족관계는 밝힐 수 없다"고 했다.

개인 경호원도 없을 뿐만 아니라 보스니아 당국이 제공하는 신변보호 조치도 눈에 띄지 않는 게 북한 지도자의 손자라는 지위와 선뜻 어울리지 않아 보인다는 인식이 깔려 있는 듯싶다.

그럼에도, 김 군은 일단 새로운 삶을 잘 적응해나가는 듯해 보였다. 학교에서 처음 만난 친구들과 밤늦도록 대화를 나눈 탓인지 김 군은 이날 오전 내내 잠을 잤다고 기숙사 친구들은 전했다.

김 군에게는 벌써 3~4명의 친구들이 생긴 것으로 보였다. 이중에는 혁명가 체게바라 얼굴이 그려진 티셔츠를 입고 있는 친구도 있었다.

김 군은 지난 2009년 개설된 SNS사이트 '마이스페이스' 계정에서 자신의 영웅으로 `레닌' `스탈린'` 체게바라' `김일성' `김정일' `피델 카스트로'를 꼽기도 했었다.

다만 1층에 있는 식당에서 점심을 먹으러 기숙사에서 잠시 나온 김 군의 모습은 취재진의 뜨거운 관심에 대한 불편함이 묻어나는 듯했다. 전날 현지 방송 보도에서 비쳤던 밝은 표정은 보이지 않았다.

그는 지금 심경을 얘기해달라는 취재진의 요청에 아무런 말없이 총총한 발걸음으로 취재진의 시야에서 벗어났다.

귀에 달린 2개의 피어싱과 은목걸이로 추정되는 목걸이는 그가 자신을 적극 표출하려는 10대임을 말해준다.

5층짜리 기숙사 건물의 3층 맨 끝에 있는 김 군의 기숙사 방은 아직 짐을 제대로 정리하지 않은 상태였다. 가방과 옷가지 등은 대충 정리돼 있었고, 아디다스 운동화와 여벌의 운동화 한 켤레가 침대 바로 옆에 포개져 있었다. 다른 방에는 아직 짐을 풀지 않은 여행용 가방도 놓여있었다.

한편, 학교 측은 김 군이 1개월 반 정도 학기를 늦게 시작한 가운데 언론의 높은 관심이 학업 공백을 메우는 데 방해될 수 있다고 걱정했다.

이날 기자회견에는 언론사 20여곳이 참석해 김정일 손자의 보스니아 유학에 대한 높은 관심을 반영했다.

학교 측은 김 군의 UWCiM 입학에 대해 그가 보스니아를 선택했다기보다 학교 측의 추천을 받아들인 것이라고 말했다.

그가 애초 홍콩의 UCWiM의 자매학교에 입학을 신청했지만 홍콩 정부에서 받아주지 않자 이 학교의 교장이 보스니아에 가면 좋겠다고 해서 이 학교에 오게 됐다는 것이 학교 측의 설명이었다.
