Small, independent firm LKH Investment Group was discovered using the names of business tycoons Lee Kun-hee and Koo Ja-hak without permission in an apparent financial scam.
Lee is chairman of Samsung Electronics, international tech giant, and Koo is the third son of the LG Group founder and married to Lee’s sister. Koo is currently the chairman of the restaurant and food services provider Our Home.
On its website, LKH Investment claims that Lee is its chairman while Koo is involved in the practical dealings of its financial schemes.
The Korea Herald spoke to the man claiming to be Koo Ja-hak, but he did not provide any evidence that he was who he claimed to be, or even that he was Korean.
He claimed that the Samsung chairman had financial interests in LKH Investment, but that he was not involved in the company’s day-to-day operations.
The address specified on LKH Investment’s website is the location of an apartment-style factory building in southwestern Seoul.
The building’s superintendent, however, said that no such company was located in the building.
Armadillo Resources, a Canada-based firm contacted by LKH Investment, began to look into the supposedly Seoul-based investor after suspicions arose, with the first being that LKH Investment’s website is registered in the U.S.
Also, Samsung Electronics and Our Home have confirmed that their chairmen had no connection to any such company.
“This is a complete scam. Chairman Lee is not involved in any way. We will decide what steps will be taken, if any action is considered necessary,“ a Samsung Group official said.
The PR department of Koo’s company, Our Home, took the same stance saying that the real Koo Ja-hak was not involved and that legal actions could follow.
The supposedly Seoul-based LKH Investment has been sending e-mails proposing lucrative deals offering to invest tens of millions of dollars in the recipient’s business.

최근 이 회사의 투자제안을 받아들여 거래를 준비 중이던 캐나다 자원개발 회사 Armadillo Resources에 보낸 이메일에는 LKH Investment대표가 구자학 회장으로 표시 되어있다.
본지와의 통화에서 구자학 회장을 사칭하는 이 남자는 본인의 신분, 심지어 어느 나라 국적을 갖고 있는지 조차 밝히길 거부했다.
구자학 회장은 LG 그룹 창업자 구인회 회장의 셋째 아들로 종합식품업체인 아워홈 그룹을 이끌고 있다.
본지 취재결과, LKH Investment의 웹사이트에 명시된 서울 주소는 가산동의 한 아파트형 공장으로 밝혀졌지만, 이 건물 관리사무소 관계자는 LKH Investment라는 회사는 입주업체 명단에 없다고 밝혔다.
Armadillo Resources의 조사 결과, LKH Investment의 웹사이트 도메인은 미국에 등록되어 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.
LKH Investment는 주로 북미의 소규모 회사들에게 거액을 투자를 미끼로 중국에 있는 한 은행에 수만 달러 규모의 보증채권을 요구하는 수법을 쓰는 것으로 알려졌다.
삼성그룹과 아워홈측에서도 이회장과 구회장 모두 LKH Investment와는 전혀 관련이 없다고 밝혔다.
삼성그룹 관계자는 “완전한 사기” 라며 후속조치가 필요하다면 취하겠다고 밝혔다.
