The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language said they will jointly hold the Second Korean Language Contest for non-Koreans on Friday at the National Folk Museum of Korea.
The event is to celebrate the upcoming Hangeul Day, or Korean Alphabet Day, on Oct. 9.
Korea annually commemorates the day, celebrating the invention of the writing system by King Sejong the Great (1397-1450).
The Korean-language contest will pick the final winner among the winners who participated in the first and second contests in 2010-2011, the ministry said.
On Friday, 40 foreigners from 16 countries will compete in group debates, individual presentations and a quiz on Korean culture.
Five winners will be able to participate as contestants in the KBS program “Korean Language Contest,” which will air on Oct. 10.
During Hangul Week from Oct. 3-9, Hangeul exhibitions, performances and a Hangeul essay contest will be held in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, the ministry said.
