Typhoon Muifa pounded South Korea's west coast, leaving at least one dead and two others missing as it proceeded northward to reach the capital of Seoul Monday morning, the meteorological office and the emergency control agency said.
As of 6:00 a.m., Muifa, the ninth typhoon of the year spawned in the West Pacific, was heading northward from waters 260 kilometers west of Seosan, according the Korea Meteorological Administration. Seosan is located 151 kilometers southwest of Seoul.
The typhoon, moving at a speed of 26km per hour, is expected to hit Seoul, the surrounding Gyeonggi region and the nearby city of Incheon late Monday morning before heading toward China's Liaodong Peninsula, just north of the Korean Peninsula, by evening, according to the meteorological office.
As it swept through the lower half of South Korea's west coast on Sunday, the typhoon killed at least one person and caused two others to go missing as it battered southern cities along the coast and the southern tourist island of Jeju.
A 75-year-old man was found dead late Sunday on the island of Wando, located at the southern tip of South Jeolla Province, after going missing while trying to moor a 1-ton ship in stormy seas, the National Emergency Management Agency said. A 50-year-old woman went missing in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province, as well as a 64-year-old man in the southern port city of Busan, after being swept away by stormy seas, according to the agency.
Hundreds of flights between Jeju Island and Seoul were canceled due to the typhoon and ensuing heavy rains on Sunday while passenger ships and other fishing boats were also moored in the Yellow Sea.
Some 220 people were left homeless in the southern coastal city of Yeosu after a downpour accompanying Muifa flooded their homes.
South Jeolla Province, one of the regions hit hardest from the typhoon, reported power failure for some 150,000 households and several ruined roads.
As of Monday morning, typhoon warnings were being issued in the capital area of Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon and the southern provinces of South Chungcheong, South and North Jeolla as well as the metropolitan cities of Daejeon and Gwangju. The warnings were also in effect for the Yellow Sea and the western part of the south sea.
But the typhoon warning imposed on Jeju Island on Sunday was lifted at around 10:00 a.m. on Monday. Seoul-Jeju flights fully resumed from 6:10 a.m. as Muifa's influence on the scenic island waned, according to airport officials.
Authorities called for special caution in the capital area as the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rains and storms as it passes through the region Monday morning. (Yonhap News)

태풍 '무이파' 수도권 영향
국내외 항공편 결항 속출
제주·전라·충청 피해 속출
서해상을 따라 북상 중인 제9호 태풍 '무이 파'의 영향권에 들면서 8일 오전부터 수도권 지역에 강풍을 동반한 비바람이 불고 있다.
직격탄을 맞은 제주와 호남·충정 지역에서는 인명 피해가 잇따랐고, 농가에서 는 침수, 낙과 등 농작물 피해가 속출했다.
태풍 무이파는 8일 오전 10시 현재 인천 서쪽 약 240㎞ 부근 해상에서 시속 약
28㎞의 속도로 북북동진하고 있다. 현재 중심기압 980헥토파스칼, 중심 부근 최대풍 속은 초속 31ｍ(시속 112㎞)로 중형급이다.
기상청 측은 무이파는 북진을 계속해 8일 오후 6시 신의주 남서쪽 약 150㎞ 해 상으로 이동할 것으로 예상했다.
◇ 인천ㆍ김포 항공편·여객선 결항 속출
태풍 무이파의 북상으로 이날 오전 중국과 제주, 김해 등지를 오가는 비행기 편 다수가 결항했다.
인천국제공항에서는 중국 베이징, 칭다오, 상하이, 광저우 등을 오가는 비행기 편 4편이 결항했다.
김포국제공항에서는 오전 김해국제공항을 오가는 비행기가 출발 5편, 도착 6편 결항했으며 울산공항을 다니는 비행기는 출발과 도착 각각 2편씩 뜨지 못했다.
그러나 7일 무더기로 결항했던 제주도 노선은 이날 정상 운항하고 있다.
김포공항은 이날 제주도 노선에 28편의 특별기를 투입해 발이 묶인 승객들을 태 울 예정이다.
서해상에 내려진 태풍경보로 인천과 섬 지역을 오가는 12개 항로의 여객선 운항 이 모두 통제됐다.
인천 앞바다와 서해5도 지역에는 이날 오전 5시 현재 초속 17~30ｍ의 강한 바람 이 불고, 파도가 최고 5ｍ로 높게 일고 있다.
경기지역도 태풍의 영향으로 비와 함께 초속 5~20ｍ로 지역에 따라 다소 강한 바람이 불고 있다.
태풍 무이파가 이날 오전 백령도와 연평도 등 서해 5도에 직접적인 영향을 줄 것으로 예보됨에 따라 인천 옹진군과 면사무소는 비상 대비태세를 유지하고 있다.
경기도재난종합상황실은 이번 태풍으로 피해는 아직 접수되지 않았다고 밝혔다.
◇ 인명 피해에 침수·과수낙과도 속출 = 밤 사이 무이파의 영향으로 전라도에 서는 배를 정박시키려던 70대가 파도에 휩쓸려 숨지는 등 제주와 전라 등 남부지역 에 피해가 속출했다.
7일 오후 5시40분께 전남 완도군 고금면 덕동리 선착장에서 김모(75)씨가 1t짜 리 배를 정박시키려다 파도에 휩쓸려 숨졌다.
앞서 같은 날 오전 11시35분께 부산 사하구 구평동 방파제에서 이모(64)씨가 파 도에 휩쓸려 실종됐고, 오후 8시40분께는 전남 화순군 한천면 한 하천에서 수련회에 참가한 박모(50.여)씨가 급류에 실종돼 경찰 등이 수색작업을 벌이고 있다.
지난 6월 태풍 메아리로 유실됐던 국토 최서남단인 전남 신안군 가거도 방파제 는 이번에도 상부 100ｍ가량이 유실된 것으로 추정돼 재난 당국이 피해조사에 나섰 다.
나주에서는 추석 출하를 앞둔 배밭 211㏊가 낙과 피해를 봤으며, 전남 곳곳에서 비닐하우스 7동(0.25㏊), 축사 1동(165㎡), 어선 6척 등 파손 피해가 접수됐다.
완도와 진도 등 서남해안 가두리 양식장에서도 양식시설이 파도에 떠내려가 본 격적인 조사가 시작되면 피해가 눈덩이처럼 불어날 것으로 보인다.
광양시 진상·다압면 등에서는 크고 작은 산사태 10건이 발생했으며, 나주, 해 남 등에서는 가로수 52그루가 쓰러졌다.
광주 북구에서는 상가 간판이 떨어지면서 전선을 끊는 바람에 3천400여가구에 정전이 발생했다 30여분 만에 복구되는 등 11만3천가구가 정전으로 불편을 겪었다.
8일 오전 4시 현재 광주·전남 15만여 가구에서 일시적인 정전 피해를 봤다.
전북지역도 도로가 유실되고 가로수가 넘어지는 등 피해가 속출했으나 인명피해 는 없었다.
집중호우로 하천이 범람하면서 오전 6시 현재 남원시 산내면 덕동리 지방도 861 호 편도 1차선이 200ｍ가량 유실돼 차량 운행이 통제되고 있다.
행정 당국은 서해안지역에 피해가 예상되자 군산 어청도 10가구와 부안 진리 7 가구 등 2개 시·군 26가구 47명을 대피시켰다.
많은 비가 내린 무주 덕유산과 남원 지리산, 정읍 내장산, 제주 한라산 등 전국 주요 산의 입산이 통제됐고 해수욕장도 피서객들의 입욕을 막고 있다.
밤사이 태풍이 강타한 제주에서는 초등학교 지붕이 날아가고 수령이 600년 된 팽나무가 부러져 조선시대 관아건물을 덮치는가 하면 2만5천여가구가 정정되는 등 각종 피해가 속출했다. (연합뉴스)
