An Afghan teen couple is facing death threats from their families for trying to marry outside of their different ethnic groups, the New York Times reported.
Traditionally, Afghans marry partners chosen by their parents from the same ethnic group.
The boy was an ethnic Tajik while the girl was part of a group called Hazara.
The two, both aged 17, fell in love at first sight in an ice cream factory in the northwestern city of Herat. After a year, they decided to marry.
The boy, Rafi Mohammed, and Halima Mohammedi, the girl, were heading to court to report their marriage when their borrowed car was stopped by another car.
Nearby pedestrians started assaulting him, claiming they should be hanged for abusing their country’s customs.
Police tried to control the crowd but it surged into a riot, burning the police car and storming into the police station.
Now, the two are being held separately in a juvenile jail. Both of their relatives want them dead for bringing disgrace to their families.
Mohammed was quoted as saying, “I feel so bad. I just pray that God gives this girl back to me. I’m ready to lose my life. I just want her safe release.“
“We are all human. God created us from one dirt. Why can we not marry each other, or love each other?” the girl was quoted as saying.

부모가 정해준 사람과 결혼해야 하는 풍습을 가진 아프가니스탄에서 10대 연인들이 남몰래 사랑을 했다가 사형에 처할 위기를 맞 았다고 뉴욕타임스(NYT)가 지난달 31일 보도했다.
17살 동갑내기 라피 모하메드(남)와 하리마 모하메디(여)가 그 슬픈 주인공들이다.
이들은 아프가니스탄 서부 헤라트주의 한 아이스크림 공장에서 만나 사랑을 키 워나갔다. 감독자의 눈을 피해 처음 인사를 나누었고 전화번호를 적은 쪽지는 직접 건네주지 못한 채 땅에 뜨린 뒤 다른 사람이 쓰레기를 치우는 척하며 줍는 방식으로 알게됐다.
둘은 가정환경이 비슷하고 성격도 닮은 점이 많아 금방 친해졌다. 매일 밤 전화 로 사랑을 확인하던 이들은 1년이 지나자 혼인신고를 하기로 결심했다.
소년은 차를 빌려 법원으로 몰고갔지만 이 차는 얼마가지 않아 다른 차에 의해 저지됐으며 사람들은 왜 남녀가 같은 차에 탔느냐며 이들을 끌어내 소년을 폭행했다 .
군중들은 두 사람이 혼전순결을 잃었다며 돌팔매로 사형시키거나 교수형을 시켜 야 한다고 주장했다.
일단 경찰이 이들을 제지했지만 관습의 힘은 만만치 않았다. 군중들은 경찰차를 불지른 뒤 경찰서에 몰려가 폭동을 일으켰다. 이 과정에서 1명이 숨지고 이 불쌍한 연인들은 수감됐다.
소녀의 큰아버지는 가족의 이름을 더럽혔다며 명예살인을 주장했고 소녀의 부친 도 어쩔 수 없다며 동의했다.
아프간 당국은 국제사회의 시선을 의식해 이들을 보호하고 있다. 지난해 쿤두즈 에서 도주행각을 벌인 연인들을 공개처형했다가 문제가 되면서 태도가 바뀐 것이다.
하지만 지역 주민들은 물러서지 않고 있다. 특히 폭동으로 숨진 희생자 가족들 은 소녀에게 “죽음으로 책임을 묻겠다”고 주장하고 있다. (연합뉴스)
