Chinese Couple accused of selling children for gaming

A Chinese couple is being accused for selling their children so that they could play video games at internet cafes, according to reports.

Li Lin and Li Juan, who first met at an Internet café in 2007, decided to sell their second child, daughter, for 3,000 yuan (about $500).

After spending their earnings, the couple sold their first child, a son, for 30,000 yuan. When their third son was born, the pair sold him once again for a similar price.

They were soon caught when Li Lin’s mother found out what they had done. Reports said that they did not want to raise their kids, but earn some money.

The couple said they were unaware that they were breaking the law.

Studies show that as many as 1 in 10 children may be video game addicts. A Japanese mother was accused of killing her child because the 3-year-old threw out her gaming system.

이들의 범행은 남자의 어머니가 발견하고 경찰에 신고해서야 밝혀졌다고 보도했다. 지역 신문에 의하면 커플은 자신의 행동이 위법인지 몰랐다며 돈을 벌기 위해 팔았다고 전했다.

어느 조사 결과에 따르면 아이 10명 중 1명이 게임 중독 정도로 게임 중독은 심각한 사회 문제로 떠오르고 있다. 올해 초 일본 오사카의 한 엄마는 자신의 게임기를 버렸다는 이유로 3살 자식을 죽인 사건이 발생하기도 했다.
