SC First Bank sues labor union leader

SC First Bank filed a complaint against its labor union leader on Wednesday with the police on charges of defamation, according to bank sources.

The bank claimed that labor union leader Kim Jae-yool damaged the bank’s image by distributing leaflets making accusations about management to the public, the sources said.

In its statement, the union criticized the bank for trying to recklessly introduce a performance-based wage system, and took issue with the largest shareholder’s management style.

The company took the legal action as the labor union ignored its repeated calls for a halt to what the bank said damages its image, according to the sources.

In response, the union leader lambasted the bank’s complaint, saying that such an action proves management has no intention to settle the dispute through dialogue.

The labor union went into strike on June 27, and out of 6,500 bank employees, about 2,900 unionized workers have been staging a rally at a resort in Sokcho, east of Seoul.

The union started the strike in protest against management’s move to introduce the new payment scheme, which it said is merely aimed at reducing labor costs. (cynthiak@heraldcorp.com)
