A male teenager was arrested Wednesday for sexually violating the corpse of a woman who had fallen from an apartment following an apparent suicide.
The 16-year-old high-school student told police that he wanted to see “what would happen.”
The incident happened in an apartment complex in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province on Monday.
According to police, he found the 68-year-old woman dead in a garden at 3:40 a.m. He sexually violated the body and then reported finding her to the police, they said.
Police began interrogating him because some suspicious traces were found on her corpse and his statements were contradictory.
He eventually confessed to the crime. Police are looking into whether he is mentally ill.
CCTV footage showed her carrying a plastic chair in the elevator, indicating that she may have killed herself, police added.

청주 청남경찰서는 20일 시신을 훼손한 혐의(사체오욕 등)로 A(18)군을 구속했 다고 밝혔다.
A군은 18일 오전 3시40분께 흥덕구의 한 아파트 화단에서 숨져 있던 B(69.여)씨를 성폭행한 혐의를 받고 있다.
애초 A군은 “한 할머니가 아파트 화단에 숨져 있다”며 경찰에 신고했으나, 시신 상태에 대한 진술이 오락가락한 점을 수상히 여긴 경찰이 집중 추궁하자 범행을 자백했다.
경찰은 “국립과학수사연구원에 시신검안을 의뢰한 결과 숨진 할머니를 성폭행했 다는 A군의 진술이 사실로 확인됐다”라며 “아니길 바랐는데 충격적이다”라고 말했다.
A군은 경찰에서 “어떻게 되는 지 보려고 그랬다”고 말하는 등 범행의 심각성을 인식하지 못하는 모습이었다고 경찰은 전했다.
이에 따라 경찰은 A군이 정신적인 문제가 있는 지도 조사중이다.
한편, 경찰은 같은 날 오전 3시10분께 B씨가 플라스틱 의자를 들고 엘리베이터 를 탄 장면이 CCTV에 찍힌 점, 아파트 12층에서 의자와 함께 B씨의 것으로 추정되는 신발이 발견된 점 등으로 미뤄 B씨가 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것으로 보고 있다. (연합뉴스)
