TOKYO (AFP) -- Japan erupted in joy early Monday after their women‘s football team won the World Cup in Germany, hailing the penalty shootout victory as a “dream come true”.

“Nadeshiko, the world number-ones!” read the headlines in extra editions of the influential daily Asahi Shimbun and the mass-circulation Yomiuri Shimbun handed out in Tokyo.
The Nadeshiko is a neat pink flower cherished in Japan as a symbol of feminine beauty and grace, belying the squad‘s tough giant-killing run to their first World Cup final.
At one bar in Shibuya, fans roared and shrieked when defender Saki Kumagai sank the winning penalty after twice coming from behind to tie the U.S. side 2-2 after extra time.
“Our players worked really hard and never gave up,” 26-year-old female sales clerk Kana Mizuno told the Jiji Press news agency. “They’ve given me courage.

이날 오전 3시49분에 시작된 여자축구 경기 TV 중계를 보지 못한 채 잠자리에 들었던 도쿄 시민들은 2011 FIFA 여자월드컵 우승 소식을 전하는 TV 뉴스를 보며 놀 란 표정을 감추지 못했다.
밤을 새워 각 가정이나 스포츠바에서 경기 중계를 지켜본 축구팬들은 도쿄 시부야(澁谷) 거리에 몰려나가 기쁨을 만끽하기도 했다.
이날 우승의 감격은 일본 여자 축구 대표팀이 월드컵 대회에서 처음으로 우승했 다는 점 말고도 상대팀이 미국이었다는 점에서 더욱 컸다. 일본 여자 축구 대표팀은 그동안 미국 대표팀과 24번 싸웠지만 한 번도 이긴 적이 없었다. 이 때문에 상당수 일본인은 경기 전날인 17일까지 자국 여자 대표팀의 승리를 기원하면서도 속으로는 ‘첫 메달에 만족해야 하지 않나’라고 생각하는 모습이었다.
그런 와중에 우승했다는 소식이 들려왔으니 일본 열도가 발칵 뒤집어질 만도 했다.
