CALIFORNIA, Pennsylvania (AP) _ Much has happened in the 53 years since Vonnie sent Clark the letter, wondering why he hadn't called before going back to college.
They married later that year. He graduated. They had four children.
They divorced. And he changed his name.
And, at last, the letter is wending its way to Clark _ that is, Muhammad Siddeeq _ who awaits its arrival with mixed emotions.
``I'm curious, but I'm not sure I'd put it under the category of `looking forward to it,''' Siddeeq told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The letter, bearing four 1-cent stamps postmarked February 1958 and addressed to Clark C. Moore, arrived in the mailroom at California University of Pennsylvania last week. School officials checked their files but couldn't figure out who Clark Moore was.
But his friends and family still lived in the area and saw media reports about the letter. They called Siddeeq, now 74 and living in Indianapolis, who had changed his name after converting to Islam.
``I never dreamed of anything like this,'' Siddeeq told the Washington Observer-Reporter.
The letter, its stamps turned upside down as sign of love, arrived at California University of Pennsylvania on July 8, tucked inside some magazines. It had already been slit open but the two-page letter from a love-struck Pittsburgh girl was still inside, addressed to her beau at what was then California State Teachers College. It was signed, ``Love Forever, Vonnie.''
The couple divorced after eight years of marriage and don't talk much now, Siddeeq said. He remarried and taught math and science in the Indianapolis public school system.
The Tribune-Review reached Vonnie at her daughter's home in Atlanta. She declined to discuss the letter and was upset that it had become public.
But Siddeeq recalled the frequent letters fondly.
``Back then, we wrote at least once or twice a week, sometimes three times,'' he told the Tribune-Review. ``That was before e-mail. It would perk your whole day up to get back to your room and find a letter.''
The letter, he told the Observer-Reporter, is ``just a testament of the sincerity, interest and innocence of that time.''

53년 만에 배달된 `연애편지'
사랑에 빠진 한 소녀가 남자친구에게 쓴 편지가 53년 만에 배달됐다.
미국 펜실베이니아 대학교의 크리스틴 킨들 대변인은 15일(현지시간) 1958년 2 월20일 자 소인이 찍히고, '클라크 무어'라는 이름 앞으로 보내진 편지가 신기하게 도 지난주 대학 우편실에 도착했다고 밝혔다.
대학 측은 이 편지를 받고 학생 파일을 뒤졌지만, 처음에는 클라크 무어가 누구 인지 알아내지 못했다.
그러나 다행히도 이 지역에 살고 있던 그의 친구들과 가족들이 편지에 관한 언론 보도를 보고 수신인에게 연락해 연락처를 알아낼 수 있었다.
올해 74살인 무어는 이슬람교로 개종하고 이름을 모하메드 시디크로 개명한 뒤 인디애나폴리스에 살고 있었다.
그는 편지 소식을 접하고 "이런 일이 일어날지는 꿈도 꾸지 못했다"고 말했다.
사랑의 표시로 우표를 거꾸로 부친 이 편지봉투 안에는 사랑에 빠진 피티스버그 에 사는 소녀가 남자친구에게 보낸 편지 2장이 들어있었고, `영원히 사랑해, 보니'
라는 서명이 쓰여있었다. 시디크는 당시 이 대학 2학년에 재학 중이었다.
이 커플은 편지가 오가면서 결혼에는 성공했으나 8년 만에 이혼했다.
시디크는 "당시에 우리는 일주일에 한두 번씩, 많게는 세 번까지 편지를 썼다"
고 회상한 뒤 "이 편지는 당시의 신실함과 순수함, 관심의 증거"라고 말했다.
킨들 대변인은 "시디크에게 대학 티셔츠와 함께 그 편지를 보냈다"며 "그는 '앞 으로 53년 안에 그 우편물을 받지 못하면 항의할 것'이라고 말했다"고 전했다.
대학 측은 당시 편지를 보낸 보니와도 연락을 취했지만, 그녀는 시디크와 더는 연락하지 않는다며 당황해 한 것으로 알려졌다.
