N. Korea-Europe joint venture firm opens luxury restaurant in Pyongyang

SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean joint venture with a European company has opened a luxury restaurant in the capital of the isolated country, the company said Tuesday.

Hana Electronics JVC opened "The Restaurant at Hana" and related leisure facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna, hairdresser and bar in its headquarters in Pyongyang, Europe-based Phoenix Commercial Ventures said on its Web site last week.

The restaurant and leisure facilities are open to North Koreans and foreigners, Phoenix Commercial Ventures said, without giving further details on the menu.

It also said there are about 150 bars and 350 restaurants as well as several 24-hour stores in the capital Pyongyang.

The European company, which offers foreign investors business and investment opportunities in North Korea, set up Hana Electronics JVC with North Korea's Culture Ministry in 2003.

Hana Electronics JVC produces and sells a range of DVD players, and plans to move into other consumer electronics products, according to Phoenix Commercial Ventures.

In 2009, a company in Singapore set up North Korea's first fast food restaurant in Pyongyang, offering food like hamburgers, waffles and beer, according to the Chosun Sinbo, a pro-North Korean newspaper in Japan.

`아리랑 DVD'로 유명한 북한의 조선하나전자합 영회사(하나전자)가 최근 평양 시내에 레스토랑과 대규모 레저시설을 건립, 운영을 시작했다.

북한 관련 투자회사인 피닉스커머셜벤처스(Phoenix Commercial Ventures Ltd)는 12일 홈페이지를 통해 하나전자의 본부가 평양 통일거리 시장 근처로 이전했다는 사 실을 전하면서 "본부 내에 레스토랑과 수영장, 사우나, 미용실, 바, 체육관 등의 레 저시설도 문을 열었다"고 밝혔다.

하나전자는 2003년 북한 문화성과 네덜란드 기업이 합작해 세운 회사로 DVD, VC D플레이어와 `아리랑 DVD' 등을 생산, 판매하고 있다.

레스토랑을 비롯한 레저 시설들은 북한 주민과 외국인 모두에게 개방되며 식재 료는 북한 내에서 조달한다.

피닉스커머셜벤처스가 공개한 사진과 동영상을 보면 레스토랑은 8∼10명이 들어 갈 수 있는 방마다 PDP TV, DVD플레이어가 설치돼있고 세탁실에는 드럼세탁기가 있 는 등 최신식 전자제품으로 고급스럽게 꾸며져 있다.

한편 북한은 주민들 사이에서 중국산 DVD, VCD 플레이어가 인기를 끌자 영상기 기를 단속하면서 하나전자의 제품은 단속 대상에서 제외하는 등의 방법으로 하나전 자 제품 판매에 주력하는 것으로 알려졌다.
