A man who set fire to his own home to retaliate against his noisy neighbor was sentenced to two years by Changwon District Court.
The 46-year-old arsonist, who lives in an apartment, said the neighbor upstairs was too noisy and he could not stand it. He said in the hearing that despite frequent remonstrations, the situation did not change.
On the day of the accident, his neighbor ignored his complaints again, he said. Angry and drunk, he set fire to his own home using an LPG container.
Although his apartment was gutted, there were no injuries. It is estimated that property loss tolled 39 million won ($36,000).
The court said that the case was serious as it could have led to a tragic accident in which human life could have been lost, and jailed him.

김해시 장유면 한 아파트 2층 입주민인 허씨는 지난 5월16일 낮 술에 취한 채 자신의 집에 있던 LPG 가스통 밸브에 불을 붙였고 가스통이 폭발하면서 집 전체가 불에 타 3천900만원의 재산피해를 낸 혐의로 구속기소됐다.
허씨는 “바로 위층 입주민과 층간소음 때문에 다툰 적이 있었는데 이날도 조용해 해달라고 해도 아무런 대답이 없어 화가 나 집에 불을 냈다”고 법정에서 범행을 인정했다.
